Triethanolamine (TEA), with the chemical formula C₆H₁₅NO₃, is a key member of the ethanolamine family. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid with a mild ammonia-like odor. It is hygroscopic and is the least alkaline of the ethanolamines. The molecule contains three hydroxyl groups and a tertiary amino group, giving it excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and neutralizing properties. It is widely used in personal care products, cement grinding aids, metalworking fluids, and chemical production.

Main Applications

Personal Care & Cosmetics: Used as an emulsifier, pH adjuster, and thickener in creams, lotions, shampoos, body washes, etc.

Metalworking: Employed as a corrosion inhibitor and emulsifier in cutting fluids, grinding fluids, and rust preventatives.

Safety Precautions

Health Hazards:
· Causes skin and eye irritation (redness and discomfort)
· May cause respiratory irritation if vapors or mists are inhaled
· Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis
· Less corrosive than MEA and DEA, but still requires careful handling
Handling Protection:

Storage & Transportation:
· Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place
· Keep containers tightly closed to prevent moisture and CO2 absorption
· Store in stainless steel or epoxy-lined containers
· Store separately from strong oxidizing agents
Fire Fighting:
· Combustible liquid. Flash point 179°C (closed cup). Can burn when exposed to open flame.
· Use water spray, foam, dry chemical, or CO2 to extinguish fire
· Use water spray to cool exposed containers and prevent re-ignition
