Basic Properties
Appearance: White crystalline powder or needle-like crystals
Melting point: Approximately 240–248°C
Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water (approx. 1.1 g/L at 20°C); soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and diethyl ether
Stability: Chemically stable under normal temperature and pressure.
Thermal decomposition: Decomposes at high temperatures (>315°C), releasing toxic fumes such as sulfur oxides and carbon oxides.
Reactivity: Reacts with strong bases, strong acids, and strong oxidizing agents.
Acidity: Due to the presence of an electron-withdrawing sulfonyl group (-SO₂-) in the molecule, it is more acidic than typical phenols.
Main Applications
Thermal Paper Color Developer (Largest Use)
BPA-free alternative. Melts and reacts with dyes upon heating. Used for receipts, logistics waybills, boarding passes, lottery tickets. EU BPA restrictions boosted BPS adoption; no mature commercial substitute currently.
Specialty Engineering Plastics & High-Performance Resins
Contains sulfone group for excellent heat and oxidation resistance. Key monomer for PSU & PESU, applied in medical devices, baby bottles, food utensils, aerospace parts. Serves as epoxy curing/modifying agent for can coatings and electronic encapsulation. High-purity grade for electronic lenses and precision packaging.
Food Contact Materials
Used in PESU/PSU bottles, food processing tools, can linings and bottle caps. China and EU enforce 0.05 mg/kg migration limit.
Electronics & Industrial Additives
BPS polymers offer heat resistance and stable dimension for electronic parts. Also used as leather retanning agent, textile color fixer, dye intermediate and coating modifier.
Safety Precautions
1. First Aid Measures (Based on water-solubility characteristics)
Inhalation: Move to fresh air and rest in a semi-upright position.
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing; wash with soap and plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Eye contact: Hold eyelids open and rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do not feed anything to an unconscious person.
2. Spill Handling (Prevent dust generation + Prevent water contamination)
Small spills: Collect using a damp cloth or an explosion-proof industrial vacuum cleaner (HEPA H13) and place in a sealed container.
Large spills: Dry sweeping is strictly prohibited (risk of dust generation). Contain using inert absorbent materials (e.g., vermiculite, diatomaceous earth) before collection.
Water contamination prevention: APP is highly water-soluble (> 90 g/100 mL); strictly prevent spilled material from entering sewers, surface water, or soil. Collected wastewater must undergo biochemical treatment to meet discharge standards before release to avoid nitrogen and phosphorus loading shocks to receiving water bodies.
