Basic Properties
Appearance: White, pale yellow to pale brown granules or powder
Odor: Characteristic faint odor
Melting Point: 76–87°C (exhibits a melting range due to being a mixture of isomers)
Hygroscopicity: Hygroscopic; store in a sealed container in a dry place.
Weak Acidity: Has a pKa of approximately 8.8, allowing it to dissolve in dilute alkaline solutions to form salts.
Chelating Ability: The triazole ring in the molecule contains lone pair electrons capable of forming stable complexes with transition metal ions such as copper and silver; this is the core mechanism behind its function as a corrosion inhibitor.
Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions; avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents.
Flammability: Combustible solid; ignites upon exposure to open flames or high temperatures.
Main Applications
1. Water Treatment & Cooling Systems
TTA is widely used in industrial closed-loop cooling water systems for power, petrochemical and metallurgy industries. It also serves as an effective passivator in transformer oil to protect copper components and oil-paper insulation.
2. Electronics & Semiconductor Manufacturing
Provides precise corrosion inhibition for semiconductor processes. It controls copper removal in CMP polishing, protects PCB circuits during cleaning, and safeguards copper and low-k structures during photoresist stripping.
3. Polymer & UV Protection
Functions as a UV absorber and polymer stabilizer, preventing UV photo-aging and material oxidation degradation during processing and long-term use.
4. Metal Passivation & Surface Treatment
Enables eco-friendly chromium-free copper passivation when blended with BTA, replacing toxic chromate treatment. It also provides excellent anti-oxidation protection for copper powder during storage and application.
Safety Precautions
Health Hazards: According to GHS classification, TTA is a hazardous substance. It is harmful if swallowed (H302), may cause serious eye irritation (H319), and is harmful if inhaled (H332).
Environmental Hazards: Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H411).
Storage Requirements: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area; keep the container tightly sealed to prevent moisture absorption. Keep away from sources of ignition and strong oxidizing agents.
