Basic Properties

1. Physical Properties

  • Appearance and Form: Colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature with a slightly pungent odor.

  • Boiling Point and Melting Point: Boiling point approximately 155℃, melting point approximately -60℃; highly volatile.

  • Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, and benzene.

  • Density and Refractive Index: Relative density (water = 1) approximately 0.89; refractive index approximately 1.413 (20℃).

  • Flash Point and Ignition Point: Flash point 42℃ (closed cup); flammable liquid; easily ignited by open flame or high heat.

2. Chemical Properties

  • Molecular Formula: [Formula omitted], Molecular Weight 142.20.

  • Polymerizability: Exhibits strong polymerization activity; slowly self-polymerizes at room temperature; polymerization is accelerated by high temperatures, light, or the presence of peroxides, producing polyisobutylene isobutylene; polymerization inhibitors (such as hydroquinone) must be added during storage. Reactivity: Can copolymerize with other acrylate monomers; capable of undergoing typical ester chemical reactions such as hydrolysis and transesterification.

  • Stability: Stable under normal temperature, light-protected, and sealed conditions; avoid contact with strong oxidants, strong acids, and strong alkalis to prevent reaction and deterioration.

Main Applications

I. Coatings and Inks

1. Acrylic Resin Coating Raw Materials

As a core comonomer, it is used to synthesize solvent-based and water-based acrylic coatings, imparting excellent weather resistance, water resistance, chemical resistance, and flexibility to the coating, while also improving gloss and adhesion. These coatings are widely used in automotive topcoats, architectural exterior coatings, industrial anti-corrosion coatings, and wood coatings.

2. Ink Additives

Used in the formulation of flexographic and gravure printing inks, it improves ink flow, film formation, and adhesion, resulting in clearer and more vibrant printed patterns and faster drying, suitable for printing applications such as food packaging and plastic films.

II. Adhesives and Sealants

1. Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) Production

Copolymerized with acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, etc., it prepares acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives, used in the manufacture of tapes, labels, medical dressings, etc. IBM can improve the holding power, peel strength, and temperature resistance of pressure sensitive adhesives, while lowering the glass transition temperature of the adhesive layer and enhancing flexibility.

2. Structural Adhesive and Sealant Modification

As a modifying monomer, it is added to polyurethane adhesives, epoxy adhesives, and other systems to improve the flexibility and aging resistance of adhesives, and enhance the crack resistance of sealants. It is suitable for sealing and bonding in the construction, automotive, and electronics industries.

III. Plastic and Resin Modification Fields

1. Plastic Toughening Modification

Used to modify plastics such as polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP) through copolymerization or blending, it improves the impact resistance, flexibility, and processing fluidity of plastics, reducing the risk of product cracking. It is suitable for manufacturing appliance casings, automotive parts, pipes, etc.

2. Synthesis of Functional Resins

Copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to synthesize modified plexiglass, reducing the material's brittleness and improving its impact strength; it can also be used to synthesize superabsorbent polymers (SAP) for products such as diapers and agricultural and forestry water-retaining agents.

IV. Textile and Leather Auxiliaries

1. Textile Sizing Agents and Finishing Agents

Used in the preparation of textile sizing agents, these agents enhance the adhesion of the sizing agent to fibers, improve yarn strength and abrasion resistance, and reduce yarn breakage during weaving. They can also be used as fabric softeners, giving fabrics a soft, smooth feel while improving wrinkle resistance.

2. Leather Finishing Agents

Used for top-coating leather, the resulting coating has good gloss, flexibility, and abrasion resistance, improving the appearance and durability of leather products. Suitable for processing shoe uppers and garment leather.

V. Other Fields

1. Cosmetic Raw Materials

Used in the synthesis of acrylate film-forming agents, added to nail polish, hairspray, foundation, and other products to form a uniform, water-resistant film, improving the durability of cosmetics.

2. Oilfield Chemicals

Used as a synthetic monomer for drilling fluid filtration reducers, these agents improve the rheology and stability of drilling fluids, reduce filtration loss during drilling, and protect oil and gas reservoirs.

Safety Precautions

Skin Contact Protection
  • IBMA liquid is irritating. Contact with skin can cause dryness, redness, and itching. Prolonged or repeated contact may lead to dermatitis. Wear nitrile rubber gloves, long-sleeved protective clothing, and high-top safety boots during handling to avoid direct skin contact. If contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes, change contaminated clothing, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Eye Protection

  • Splashing into the eyes can severely irritate the conjunctiva and cornea, causing stinging, redness, swelling, and tearing. In severe cases, it may damage the cornea. Wear impact-resistant goggles and a face shield during operation, especially when stirring, transferring, or filling. If eye contact occurs, immediately lift the eyelids and flush continuously with plenty of sterile saline or water for 15-20 minutes. Do not rub your eyes during this time, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Respiratory Protection

  • IBMA vapor is irritating. Inhalation can cause throat discomfort, coughing, and chest tightness. Inhalation of high concentrations may cause dizziness, nausea, and even damage to the respiratory mucosa. Operations must be conducted in a closed fume hood or a forced-ventilation work area, wearing an organic vapor respirator (such as a P-A-1 filter cartridge); avoid prolonged exposure to high-concentration vapor environments, and rest in a well-ventilated area immediately after work.

Ingestion Prevention

  • IBMA is toxic. Ingestion can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it may damage the liver. Thoroughly wash hands after handling. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. The product must be stored in a sealed container in a dedicated warehouse, strictly isolated from food, beverages, and animal feed. The packaging must be labeled "Toxic and Flammable Liquid" and "Do Not Consume." If ingestion occurs, do not induce vomiting; immediately drink plenty of warm water to dilute the substance and seek medical attention with the product label in hand.
