Basic Properties


1. Physical Properties

Appearance: Usually black or dark brown granular with a metallic luster.

Density: Relatively high, generally between 4.2 - 4.8 g/cm³, depending on the TiO₂ content and impurity type.

Magnetic Properties: Weakly magnetic, due to the presence of titanomagnetite or ilmenite which is magnetized during beneficiation.

Melting Point: Relatively high; as a complex mixture, there is no fixed melting point, but the initial melting temperature is usually above 1300°C.

Hardness: Mohs hardness is approximately 5-6, relatively hard.


2. Chemical Properties

Main Components: The main component is titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Industrially, the grading of titanium concentrate is mainly based on its TiO₂ content (usually 50%-65%).

Main Applications


1. Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂ Pigment) Production - Largest Application (Approximately 90%)

Titanium dioxide is the whitest pigment in the world, possessing extremely high hiding power, tinting strength, and chemical stability.


2. Production of Metallic Titanium (Sponge Titanium) and Titanium Alloys

Titanium concentrate is first enriched and chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄).

Titanium tetrachloride is then reduced to sponge titanium via the magnesothermic reduction process (Klaus process).

Sponge titanium is smelted into titanium ingots, which are then processed into titanium materials and titanium alloys.


3. Welding Electrode Coating

Titanium concentrate is one of the important raw materials for welding electrode coatings. Its main functions are:

Slag Formation: Forming slag to cover the weld, preventing metal oxidation and nitriding.

Arc Stabilization: Improving arc stability.

Alloying: Transmitting beneficial alloying elements into the weld metal.


4. Other Applications

Production of Titanate Esters: As chemical intermediates.

Refractory materials: Used in small quantities in the manufacture of high-temperature refractory products.

Abrasion-resistant floor fillers: Utilizing their high hardness and density.

Environmental Impact

Solid Waste: Large-scale accumulation may occupy land, and dust carried by the wind can pollute the surrounding environment.

Chemical Stability: Due to its chemical inertness, titanium concentrate itself will not cause serious chemical pollution to water bodies and soil. However, the "three wastes" generated during its production process (especially the sulfuric acid process) have a significant impact on the environment.


Storage and Transportation

Storage: Should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Store separately from acids, halogens, and other chemicals. Keep containers sealed to prevent dust escape.

Transportation: Usually transported as general cargo, but during transportation, ensure that the packaging is intact to prevent rain, moisture, and packaging damage. Special attention should be paid to dust control during bulk transportation.
