Basic Properties
Physical Properties
Solubility in water: Approximately 2.5 g/100 mL (at 20°C). It is sparingly soluble in water but forms an azeotropic mixture with it (azeotropic boiling point: 66°C).
Solubility in organic solvents: Miscible in all proportions. It can be mixed in any ratio with the vast majority of common organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, and toluene.
Coefficient of expansion: 0.0011/°C (volume changes significantly with temperature; temperature compensation is required during measurement).
Chemical Properties
Self-polymerization: VAM is extremely sensitive to heat, light, and peroxides, and readily undergoes free-radical polymerization. A polymerization inhibitor (typically hydroquinone or MEHQ, at a concentration of approximately 3–5 ppm) must be added for safe storage.
Hydrolysis: In strongly acidic or alkaline environments, VAM rapidly hydrolyzes to form acetaldehyde and acetic acid, leading to product degradation and equipment corrosion.
Transesterification: It can undergo transesterification with alcohols; this reaction serves as the basis for producing other vinyl esters.
Reaction with oxygen: In the presence of oxygen, it readily forms explosive peroxides.
Main Applications
Adhesives & Pressure‑sensitive adhesives: Raw material for water‑based wood adhesives, packaging adhesives and PSA products, delivering good bonding strength for paper, wood and textiles.
Coatings & Paints: Used for interior water‑borne architectural coatings, emulsion paints, providing excellent film‑forming performance.
Textile industry: For textile finishing agents and fabric sizing agents, improving fabric hand feel and wear resistance.
Packaging materials & EVA products: Manufacture of EVA hot‑melt adhesives, packaging films and foam materials.
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) production: Core feedstock for PVA, further applied in construction additives, paper sizing agents and water‑soluble films.
Other downstream sectors: Applied in sealants, caulks and composite resin formulations.
Safety Precautions
1. Firefighting Measures
Extinguishing Agents: Alcohol-resistant foam or carbon dioxide is recommended. Exercise caution when using a direct water stream (impact on the liquid surface can cause VAM to splash and spread the fire).
Firefighter Protection: As the combustion and decomposition of VAM produce irritating and toxic fumes—such as carbon monoxide and acetic acid—firefighters must wear fully encapsulated chemical-protective suits and positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
2. Large-Scale Spills (Handling Procedures)
Prevent Discharge into Sewers/Waterways: VAM is less dense than water; it floats on the surface and spreads with the flow. Additionally, its vapor is heavier than air (specific gravity of 3.0) and can travel along the ground to distant ignition sources.
Emergency Steps: Cut off all power sources → Evacuate personnel downwind → Construct dikes using sand, soil, or vermiculite for containment → Apply foam to suppress volatilization → Transfer the material into dedicated open-top containers.
3. Medical First Aid (Inhalation Exposure)
In the event of inhaling high concentrations of VAM vapor—resulting in symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, or mucous membrane irritation—immediately move the affected person to an area with fresh air and ensure the airway remains unobstructed.
