It is a fundamental feedstock in petrochemicals, but its use is strictly regulated due to carcinogenicity.

  1. Chemical Feedstock:

    • Ethylbenzene → Styrene (Polystyrene/ABS plastics)

    • Cyclohexane → Nylon 6/66

    • Cumene → Phenol/Acetone (Bisphenol A precursor)

  2. Solvent:

    • Selective reaction solvent (being replaced by toluene)

    • HPLC/GC analytical reagent

  3. Fuel Additive:

    • Octane booster in gasoline (phased out due to toxicity)

      → Closed negative-pressure system + explosion-proof ventilation (<0.5 ppm)
      → Continuous benzene vapor monitors (alarm at 1 ppm)

    • PPE:
      → Supplied-air respirator (Level A) (mandatory for all operations)
      → Viton gloves + Type 1 certified suits

    • Restrictions: Pregnant/hematologic disease workers prohibited

  • Emergency:

    • Spill: Absorb with activated carbon, suppress vapor with foam

    • Inhalation: Immediate CPR + IV antidotes (NO epinephrine!)
