Dioctyl Phthalate (DOP), more accurately known as Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), is the world's most produced and widely used general-purpose plasticizer (C₂₄H₃₈O₄). It is a colorless to pale yellow, oily liquid with a faint odor. DOP/DEHP has been the primary plasticizer of choice for plastics like Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) due to its excellent overall performance, good compatibility, and low cost. However, because it is classified as a reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor, its use in many consumer products is now strictly restricted or banned under major global regulations.

Main Applications


  1. General-purpose Plasticizer (Legacy/Restricted Use):

    • As a primary plasticizer for flexible Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) products such as wire & cable insulation, flooring, wall coverings, artificial leather, hoses, films, imparting flexibility, extensibility, and durability.

    • Used in non-PVC applications like nitrocellulose lacquers and sealants.

  2. Non-Consumer Applications:

    • Medical Devices: Used in plastic blood bags and tubing (still used but being replaced).

    • Industrial Products: Used in automotive parts, industrial hoses, conveyor belts where plasticizer migration is less critical.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Classified as Reproductive Toxicity Category 1B (e.g., EU CLP); may damage fertility and harm the unborn child.

    • Suspected of causing endocrine disruption.

    • Long-term exposure may cause damage to the liver.

    • While dermal absorption and vapor inhalation risk is low (due to low volatility), avoid exposure to dust/aerosols and prevent ingestion (a key exposure route).

  • Environmental Hazards:

    • Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

    • High migration leads to widespread environmental contamination. Not readily biodegradable; bioaccumulative.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Engineering Controls: Use local exhaust ventilation, especially if heated or aerosol generation is possible. Prefer closed systems.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Impervious gloves (e.g., nitrile, neoprene) are essential.

      • Wear impervious protective clothing.

      • Use a particulate respirator if mist or dust is generated.

      • Wear chemical safety goggles.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Separate from strong oxidants, acids, bases.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation (Aerosol/Mist): Remove to fresh air. Give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek medical attention.

    • Skin Contact: IMMEDIATELY wash with plenty of soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse cautiously with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

    • Ingestion: Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY! Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.

    • Spill: Absorb with inert material (e.g., sand, activated carbon). Prevent entry into drains or waterways.
