Main Applications


  1. Dry Cleaning Industry:

    • The primary solvent for textile dry-cleaning ("perc dry cleaning"), being gradually replaced by alternative technologies.

  2. Metal Processing:

    • Vapor degreasing and cold cleaning of precision metal parts.

  3. Chemical Feedstock:

    • Intermediate in the production of refrigerants HCFC-123 and HFC-125.

    • Intermediate in the production of fluoropolymers.

  4. Other Uses:

    • Solvent for adhesives and sealants.

    • Remover for printing inks.

  • Health Hazards:

    • Inhalation depresses the central nervous system, causing dizziness, headache, confusion, and even unconsciousness.

    • Classified as a probable human carcinogen (IARC Group 2A), linked to an increased risk of certain cancers.

    • Long-term exposure may damage the liver and kidneys.

    • Skin contact causes defatting and irritation and can be absorbed in small amounts.

  • Environmental Hazards:

    • Very toxic to aquatic life.

    • Resists biodegradation and can persist in soil and groundwater.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Must be used with adequate ventilation (e.g., fume hood) or local exhaust ventilation.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical safety goggles.

      • Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile, Viton) and protective clothing to avoid skin contact.

      • Use appropriate respiratory protection (e.g., organic vapor cartridge) if exposure limits could be exceeded.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place in a tightly closed container. Due to high density, use specially designed robust containers and shelving.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen and seek medical attention.

    • Skin Contact: Wash immediately with plenty of soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse cautiously with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

    • Spill: Absorb with non-combustible material (e.g., sand, earth). Collect in sealed container. Prevent from entering drains.
