Cyclohexanone

Cyclohexanone is an alicyclic ketone (C₆H₁₀O) with a pungent, acetone-like odor with a minty note. It is a medium-high boiling, polar excellent solvent with strong dissolving power for many resins, oils, and cellulose derivatives. It is a key intermediate in the production of caprolactam and adipic acid, which are the primary feedstocks for Nylon 6 and Nylon 66.

Main Applications


  1. Chemical Feedstock (Primary Use):

    • Caprolactam: >90% of production is used to make this monomer for Nylon 6.

    • Adipic Acid: Oxidized to adipic acid for Nylon 66 and polyurethane production.

  2. Industrial Solvent:

    • Used in paints, inks, and coatings, especially for screen printing inks.

    • Used as a metal degreaser and equipment cleaner.

    • Used as a degreasing and leveling agent in leather processing.

    • Serves as a solvent and intermediate in agrochemical production.

  3. Other Uses:

    • Acts as a chain transfer agent in polymerization reactions.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Vapors are irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract, causing headache, dizziness, nausea.

    • Inhalation of high concentrations has narcotic effects, potentially leading to unconsciousness and CNS depression.

    • Liquid is irritating to the skin, can cause defatting and dermatitis; can be absorbed through the skin.

    • Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause damage to organs (liver, kidneys, central nervous system).

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Combustible liquid. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air. Risk of fire upon contact with heat or flames. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel along the ground to an ignition source.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Use with adequate ventilation. Use local exhaust ventilation. Prevent vapor accumulation.

    • Fire Prevention: Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and oxidizers. Use explosion-proof equipment.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical safety goggles and face shield.

      • Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile, neoprene) and protective clothing.

      • Use a respirator for organic vapors if needed.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Separate from oxidizers, strong bases.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Keep airways clear. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration and seek medical attention immediately.

    • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water or saline for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

    • Spill: Eliminate all ignition sources. Absorb with sand or other inert material and collect in container. Can be rinsed with plenty of water, but prevent entry into drains.
