Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is one of the most commonly used phthalate plasticizers (C₁₆H₂₂O₄). It is a colorless to faint yellow, oily liquid that is almost odorless or has a very faint aromatic odor. DBP has excellent plasticizing properties, good compatibility, and low volatility, and was widely used in plastics like Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). However, due to its potential reproductive and developmental toxicity, its use is strictly restricted and banned in many applications, especially toys and childcare articles.

Main Applications


  1. Plasticizer (Primary Use):

    • As a secondary or primary plasticizer for PVC, nitrocellulose, synthetic rubber to impart flexibility and processability.

    • Used in the production of adhesives, sealants, printing inks.

  2. Solvent & Additive:

    • As a solvent for pesticides, cosmetics (e.g., nail polish) (greatly reduced or banned).

    • As an additive in lubricating oils, release agents.

  3. Other (Highly Restricted):

    • Formerly used to plasticize cellulose esters and ethers.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Classified as a Reproductive Toxin (Category 1B). May damage fertility or harm the unborn child.

    • Long-term or repeated exposure may cause damage to organs (liver, kidneys).

    • Although dermal absorption is slow, avoid all skin contact.

    • Inhalation of aerosol or vapor may cause respiratory tract irritation.

  • Environmental Hazards:

    • Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

    • Not readily biodegradable; can accumulate in the environment and organisms.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Engineering Controls: Use local exhaust ventilation. Prefer closed systems.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical-resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile, neoprene).

      • Wear impervious protective clothing.

      • Use a respirator for organic vapors if mist or vapor is generated.

      • Wear chemical safety goggles.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Keep away from strong oxidants.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, rest. Seek medical attention if unwell.

    • Skin Contact: IMMEDIATELY wash with plenty of soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

    • Ingestion: Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY! Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.

    • Spill: Absorb with inert material (e.g., sand, activated carbon). Prevent entry into drains, waterways, basements.
