  • Azeotrope: Forms an azeotrope with water (B.P. 78.2°C, 95.6% ethanol), hence 100% ethanol cannot be obtained by simple distillation.

Main Applications


  1. Disinfectant:

    • 70-80% ethanol solution is most effective for disinfection of skin and medical equipment surfaces.

  2. Food & Beverage:

    • The intoxicating ingredient in alcoholic beverages.

    • Used as an extraction solvent (e.g., vanilla extract) and flavoring agent.

  3. Industrial Solvent:

    • Used in perfumes, coatings, inks, cosmetics (e.g., colognes, mouthwashes).

    • Used in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and plant extracts.

  4. Fuel & Additive:

    • Fuel ethanol, blended with gasoline (e.g., E10).

  5. Chemical Feedstock:

    • Production of acetaldehyde, acetic acid, ethyl esters, etc.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Vapors are mildly irritating to eyes and respiratory tract.

    • Main risk is from ingestion. It is a CNS depressant causing intoxication (dizziness, euphoria, slurred speech, ataxia). Overdose leads to coma, respiratory depression, death.

    • Chronic heavy ingestion causes liver damage, addiction, and other health issues.

    • Prolonged skin contact causes defatting, dryness, and dermatitis.

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Use with adequate ventilation.

    • Fire Prevention: Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, oxidizers.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical safety goggles.

      • Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile rubber).

      • Use a respirator for organic vapors if needed.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Separate from oxidizers, acids. Industrial ethanol is often DENATURED (e.g., with methanol, Bitrex) to make it undrinkable and must be labeled as such.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, rest.

    • Skin Contact: Remove clothing, wash with soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse with water for several minutes.

    • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately. Supportive care for non-denatured ethanol.

    • Spill: Eliminate ignition sources. Absorb with sand or inert material.
