Main Applications


  1. Chemical Feedstock (Primary Use):

    • Phenolic Resins: >40% of production for Bakelite, laminates, molding compounds, adhesives.

    • Caprolactam: Via cyclohexanone, monomer for Nylon 6.

    • Bisphenol A (BPA): For polycarbonate (PC) plastics and epoxy resins.

  2. Derivatives:

    • Production of alkylphenols, salicylic acid (precursor to aspirin), etc.

  3. Other Uses (Declining):

    • Medical disinfectant and preservative (largely replaced due to toxicity).

    • Preservative in very low concentrations in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Highly toxic. Fatal if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through skin.

    • Skin Contact: Causes severe chemical burns. May be painless initially (local anesthetic effect), followed by severe pain and tissue necrosis (whitening/browning).

    • Eye Contact: Causes severe burns and permanent eye damage/blindness.

    • Inhalation irritates respiratory tract severely, may cause pulmonary edema.

    • Chronic exposure damages liver, kidneys, CNS.

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Combustible solid/liquid (above MP). Dust may form explosive mixtures with air.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Engineering Controls: Strictly closed system! Local and general exhaust ventilation. Prevent dust formation (solid).

    • Personal Protection (CRITICAL):

      • Skin/Body: Impervious protective clothing (e.g., Tychem®), neoprene or Viton gloves, apron, safety boots. MANDATORY.

      • Eyes/Face: Full face shield or visor + safety goggles.

      • Respiratory: Use supplied-air respirator (SCBA or AHF) if exposure limits could be exceeded.

    • Storage: Cool, ventilated area (molten requires heating >41°C). Separate from oxidizers, strong bases, foodstuffs.

  • First Aid (IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED):

    • Skin Contact: IMMEDIATELY remove contaminated clothing. Wipe/Flush with POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL (PEG 300/400) or GLYCEROL for at least 15 minutes, THEN flush with copious water. DO NOT USE ETHANOL or water initially (enhances absorption). Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Eye Contact: IMMEDIATELY rinse with plenty of water/saline for at least 30 minutes, lifting eyelids. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Give oxygen if needed. Artificial respiration if stopped. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Spill: Small: Absorb with sand/earth. Large: Contain. Personnel require Level A protection.
