Main Applications


  1. Lithium-ion Batteries (Primary Use):

    • As an electrolyte solvent in Li-ion batteries for smartphones, EVs, energy storage. Requires extremely high purity (battery grade).

  2. Environmentally Friendly Solvent:

    • Replaces MTBE as a gasoline oxygenate and octane booster.

    • Replaces chlorinated solvents (e.g., trichloroethylene) in metal degreasing and precision cleaning.

    • Used as a low-toxicity solvent in coatings, inks, adhesives.

  3. Chemical Intermediate:

    • Feedstock for non-phosgene route to produce Polycarbonate (PC) (transesterified with phenol to diphenyl carbonate).

    • Used in organic synthesis for carbonylation and methylation reactions.

    • Intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Low toxicity. Vapors are irritating to eyes and respiratory tract.

    • High concentrations may cause dizziness, headache, CNS depression (narcotic effects).

    • Liquid causes mild defatting and skin irritation, may lead to dryness.

    • Ingestion may cause GI irritation and CNS effects.

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Use with adequate ventilation.

    • Fire Prevention: Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, oxidizers.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical safety goggles.

      • Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile rubber).

      • Use a respirator for organic vapors if needed.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Separate from oxidizers, strong acids, bases.

  • First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Give oxygen if needed. Seek medical attention.

    • Skin Contact: Remove clothing, wash with soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water/saline for 15 mins, seek medical attention.

    • Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.

    • Spill: Eliminate ignition sources. Absorb with sand or inert material.
