Methanol, also known as Wood Alcohol, is the simplest saturated monohydric alcohol (CH₃OH). It is a colorless, clear, volatile liquid with a slight alcoholic odor. It is an excellent polar protic solvent. Methanol is a vital bulk chemical feedstock for producing formaldehyde, acetic acid, etc., and also serves as a fuel and solvent. However, its high toxicity (can cause blindness or death) is its most critical hazard.

Main Applications


  1. Chemical Feedstock (Primary Use):

    • Formaldehyde: >40% of production for urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde resins (for wood panels, adhesives, plastics).

    • Acetic Acid: Produced via methanol carbonylation.

    • Biodiesel: Production via transesterification reaction.

  2. Solvent:

    • Solvent for paints, inks, dyes.

    • Solvent in synthetic reactions.

  3. Energy & Fuel:

    • Directly as fuel (racing cars, model airplanes) or fuel blending component.

    • Used in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC).

    • Gasoline additive (octane booster, emission reduction).

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Highly toxic. Ingestion is the main route; even small amounts (<30mL) can cause blindness or death.

    • Initial symptoms (after 6-36h latency): Headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, blurred vision ("snow-field" vision) – A critical sign requiring immediate medical help!

    • Severe poisoning: Metabolic acidosis, coma, permanent blindness, respiratory failure, death.

    • Can be absorbed through skin and by inhalation. Chronic exposure damages the nervous system.

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Highly flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air. Easily ignited by heat, sparks, flames. Vapors heavier than air.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Use with adequate ventilation. Use local exhaust ventilation. Prevent vapor accumulation.

    • Fire Prevention: Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, oxidizers. Use explosion-proof equipment. Control static electricity.

    • Personal Protection:

      • Wear chemical safety goggles and face shield.

      • Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile, Viton) and protective clothing.

      • Use a respirator for organic vapors.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated, explosion-proof area. Keep container tightly closed. Separate from oxidizers, strong acids. Label clearly: "POISON".

  • First Aid (CRITICAL FOR INGESTION):

    • Ingestion: Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious, administration of ethanol (medical alcohol) can be a first-aid measure (competitive inhibition) but ONLY under medical guidance.

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Give oxygen if needed. Seek medical attention.

    • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.

    • Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water/saline for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

    • Spill: Eliminate ignition sources. Absorb with sand or inert material.
