Basic Properties

  • Appearance and Morphology

Calcium hydroxide is a white powdery solid under normal conditions, with no special odor. Industrial products may appear grayish-white due to the presence of small amounts of impurities (such as calcium carbonate and calcium oxide).

  • Solubility

Calcium hydroxide is a slightly soluble substance, with extremely low solubility in water, and this solubility decreases with increasing temperature: at 20℃, the solubility is approximately 0.165 g/100 mL of water. The transparent solution formed after dissolution is called **clear limewater**. If excess is dissolved, a milky-white lime milk (suspension) is formed.

  • Density and Melting Point

The density of calcium hydroxide is approximately 2.24 g/cm³. When heated to 580℃, it undergoes a decomposition reaction, producing calcium oxide and water; therefore, it has no definite melting point.

  • Hygroscopicity and Corrosivity

Calcium hydroxide has a certain degree of hygroscopicity. When exposed to air, it easily absorbs carbon dioxide, forming calcium carbonate and hardening. Its powder and solution are slightly corrosive to skin and mucous membranes.

Main Applications

I. Core Applications in the Construction Industry

  • Preparation of Lime Mortar and Concrete

Calcium hydroxide is a key raw material in traditional lime mortar. When mixed with sand and water, it forms a strong coating when applied to walls. Added to concrete, it improves the workability and durability of the concrete. In air, calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate, causing the mortar or concrete to gradually harden, achieving bonding and load-bearing functions.

  • Wall Plastering and Base Treatment

Lime slurry, prepared by mixing calcium hydroxide powder with water, can be directly used for wall plastering, providing leveling, moisture-proofing, and mildew-proofing effects. It can also serve as a base material for wall coatings, enhancing adhesion between the coating and the wall and reducing the risk of wall cracking.

  • Bonding of Masonry

In traditional masonry construction, lime mortar is often used to bond bricks and stones. The calcium carbonate crystals produced during its hardening process fill the gaps between bricks and stones, improving the stability and sealing of the masonry structure.

II. Key Applications in Environmental Protection

  • Acidic Wastewater Treatment

As a moderately strong alkali, calcium hydroxide is a commonly used neutralizing agent in industrial wastewater treatment. It can effectively adjust the pH value of acidic wastewater from industries such as electroplating, metallurgy, and chemicals. Simultaneously, it can react with heavy metal ions (such as copper, lead, and zinc ions) in the wastewater to form insoluble hydroxide precipitates, achieving heavy metal removal at a much lower cost than strong alkalis like sodium hydroxide.

  • Flue Gas Desulfurization and Denitrification

In industrial flue gas treatment in coal-fired power plants, steel mills, etc., lime slurry or dry powder made from calcium hydroxide can react with sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the flue gas to produce harmless substances such as calcium sulfate and calcium sulfite, achieving desulfurization and denitrification. This is an economical and environmentally friendly flue gas purification solution.

  • Municipal Solid Waste Leachate Treatment

Leachate from municipal solid waste landfills is highly acidic and contains a large amount of pollutants. Calcium hydroxide can be used to neutralize the acidity of the leachate while promoting the flocculation and sedimentation of organic matter and suspended solids, improving the efficiency of subsequent treatment.

III. Applications in the Chemical Industry

  • Preparation of Chemical Raw Materials

    - Reaction with sodium carbonate to produce calcium carbonate precipitate and sodium hydroxide, the traditional caustic soda production process, suitable for small and medium-sized chemical enterprises.

    - As a raw material for bleaching powder, calcium hydroxide reacts with chlorine to produce calcium hypochlorite, the core active ingredient of bleaching powder.

  • Water Softening and Purification

Used for hard water softening, calcium hydroxide reacts with calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate in hard water to produce calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide precipitates, reducing the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water; it can also be used as a flocculant in drinking water purification, accelerating the sedimentation of impurities in water.

IV. Applications in the Agricultural Sector

  • Soil Improvement

For acidic soils, calcium hydroxide can neutralize soil acidity, adjust soil pH, improve soil aggregate structure, promote the reproduction of beneficial microorganisms, and enhance soil fertility; it can also eliminate the toxic effects of excessive aluminum and iron ions on crops, making it particularly suitable for improving acidic soils in tea gardens, orchards, and vegetable fields.

  • Pesticide and Fertilizer Preparation

    - Preparation of Bordeaux Mixture: Bordeaux mixture, made from a mixture of calcium hydroxide and copper sulfate, is a classic broad-spectrum fungicide effective against downy mildew, anthracnose, and other diseases in fruit trees and vegetables.

    - As a fertilizer additive: Calcium hydroxide can regulate fertilizer pH, promote the release of nutrients such as phosphorus and potassium, and improve crop absorption efficiency.

V. Other Applications

  • Food Processing Industry

Food-grade calcium hydroxide can be used as an acidity regulator and coagulant, for example:

    - In soy product processing, it is used to coagulate soy milk into tofu and bean curd, improving the texture and firmness of soy products;

    - In the production of preserved eggs, it is used as a component of the pickling liquid to promote egg coagulation and flavor formation.

  • Leather Processing Industry

Used in the leather dehairing process, the alkalinity of calcium hydroxide can break down the keratin protein in the leather raw material, achieving gentle dehairing without damaging the leather fibers, thus ensuring leather quality.

  • Dental Medical Applications

Dental calcium hydroxide paste has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and dentin-repair-promoting effects. It is commonly used in the treatment of pulpitis and periapical periodontitis and is a commonly used root canal filling material in dental clinical practice.

Safety Precautions

I. Health and Safety Precautions

  • Skin Contact Protection

Calcium hydroxide powder and suspension (lime milk) are alkaline and corrosive. Direct contact can damage the skin's lipid layer, causing dryness, peeling, and redness. Long-term contact or contact with high concentrations may cause chemical burns. When handling, wear thick nitrile rubber gloves, long-sleeved protective clothing, and high-top safety boots to avoid exposing the skin. If accidental contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. If burning pain or ulceration occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Eye Protection

If calcium hydroxide powder or solution splashes into the eyes, it will irritate the conjunctiva and cornea, causing conjunctival congestion, severe pain, and blurred vision. In severe cases, it can damage the corneal epithelium. Wear impact-resistant goggles during operation. During dusty processes such as feeding and mixing, it is recommended to use a full-face mask for enhanced protection. If eye contact occurs, immediately lift the eyelids and flush continuously with plenty of sterile saline or water for 15-20 minutes. Do not rub your eyes during this time, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

  • Respiratory Protection

Inhalation of calcium hydroxide dust can irritate the nasal, pharyngeal, and respiratory mucosa, causing cough, dry throat, and chest tightness. Long-term inhalation may also induce bronchitis. Operations must be carried out in a fume hood or a forced-ventilation work area, while wearing a KN95 or higher level dust mask; a half-face respirator may be used if necessary. Prolonged grinding and sieving operations without protection are prohibited. Ventilate the area immediately after operation.

  • Ingestion Protection

Calcium hydroxide is not edible. Ingestion can burn the mucosa of the mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. Thoroughly wash hands after handling. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. The product must be stored in a sealed container in a dedicated warehouse, strictly isolated from food, beverages, and animal feed. The packaging must be labeled with warnings such as "Strong Alkaline Corrosive" and "Do Not Ingest." If ingestion occurs, do not induce vomiting. Immediately drink plenty of milk or egg whites (to neutralize the alkalinity and protect mucous membranes) and seek medical attention with the product label in hand.

II. Storage and Transportation Safety Precautions

  • Storage Requirements

    - Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated dedicated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should be controlled below 35℃, and the relative humidity should not exceed 60% to prevent the product from absorbing moisture, clumping, or deteriorating.

    - Use sealed, moisture-proof packaging (such as woven bags lined with plastic film or sealed containers). When stacking, elevate the bottom at least 15cm and maintain a 30cm distance from the wall to avoid contact with damp surfaces. Once opened, the product should be used as soon as possible; any remaining product must be resealed tightly.

    - Do not store with acids, acidic oxides, or water-soluble salts, such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, carbon dioxide, or ammonium chloride, to prevent neutralization or double decomposition reactions that could lead to deterioration. Store separately from other chemical products, with clearly marked isolation areas.

    - The storage area should be equipped with dry spill response equipment (dry brooms, shovels, sealed containers) and appropriate fire extinguishers (dry powder fire extinguishers).

  • Transportation Requirements

       - Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean. Moisture-proof tarpaulins should be laid inside the vehicle to prevent the product from coming into contact with moisture. During transportation, the tarpaulin should be tightly covered to prevent rain, moisture, and dust.

    - Handle with care during loading and unloading to prevent packaging damage and powder leakage. Mixing with acids, food, or daily chemical products is strictly prohibited. Loading and unloading personnel must wear full protective gear.

    - Follow regulations for the transportation of alkaline corrosives. Transportation routes should avoid sensitive areas such as residential areas, schools, and water sources. Regularly check the packaging for damage during transport.

III. Leakage Emergency Handling

  • Small Leakage: Immediately collect the leaked material into a sealed, dedicated container using a dry broom or shovel. Label it "Waste Calcium Hydroxide" and hand it over to a qualified unit for disposal. Do not discard it indiscriminately. Avoid washing the leaked area with water to prevent the formation of alkaline wastewater that pollutes the environment.

  • Large-scale leakage: Immediately establish a warning zone, prohibiting unauthorized personnel and vehicles from entering; contain the leak area with dry sand or impermeable mats to prevent powder spread; handling personnel must wear protective clothing, goggles, dust masks, and thick gloves, and maintain dryness throughout the process; collect the leaked material and seal it for safe transfer, avoiding contact with air and moisture.

IV. Environmental Safety Precautions

Calcium hydroxide is highly alkaline. If a large amount enters a water body, it will cause a sharp increase in the pH value, damaging the aquatic ecosystem and causing the death of aquatic organisms such as fish and shrimp. Waste residue and wastewater generated during the production process must be neutralized (by adding an appropriate amount of weak acid to adjust the pH to around 7) before discharge. Direct discharge into rivers, lakes, or other natural water bodies is strictly prohibited.

Discarded calcium hydroxide packaging must be collected and disposed of by professional institutions; it must not be discarded arbitrarily. Expired or scrapped calcium hydroxide must be entrusted to a qualified hazardous waste treatment unit for disposal; unauthorized burial or mixing with domestic waste is prohibited.
