Trisodium Phosphate (TSP)

Trisodium phosphate (TSP) is a white crystalline powder or granules, readily soluble in water and exothermic, with an aqueous solution that is strongly alkaline and slightly soluble in ethanol. It loses its water of crystallization upon heating to 100°C and decomposes at high temperatures. Industrially, it is mainly prepared through the neutralization of phosphoric acid with sodium hydroxide and the double displacement reaction of sodium phosphate with sodium carbonate. Its core applications include detergent additives (powerful detergency, water softening), food additives (moisture retention agents, acidity regulators), water treatment agents, and degreasing and rust removal agents for metal surfaces. It is also used in papermaking, printing and dyeing, and ceramics industries.

Basic Properties


Sodium tripolyphosphate is a white crystalline or crystalline powder, readily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. Its core properties stem from its unique chemical structure, giving it several key functions.


** **Chelation:** This is its most important property. Sodium tripolyphosphate can form stable, soluble complexes with metal ions such as calcium and magnesium in water.


**Effect:** Effectively softens hard water, preventing metal ions from adversely affecting detergents and equipment (such as precipitation, scaling, and reduced washing effectiveness).


**Dispersion:** It disperses solid particles, dirt, and grease into tiny particles, suspending them in the solution and preventing redeposition onto clothing, utensils, or other surfaces.


**Effect:** Improves the detergency of detergents, leaving washed items whiter and brighter.


**Emulsification:** Helps disperse oily substances into fine droplets in water, forming a relatively stable emulsion.


**Effect:** Enhances the removal of oil stains.


Buffering effect


It maintains the pH value of the solution within a relatively stable range.


Effect: During washing, it keeps the washing solution in a suitable alkaline environment (usually pH 9-10), thereby enhancing the cleaning effect.


Providing alkalinity


Its aqueous solution is alkaline, which helps to saponify grease and neutralize acidic dirt.

Main Applications

1. Synthetic Detergent Industry 

Building Agents: In the past, this was an indispensable core building agent in synthetic detergents such as laundry powder and dishwashing liquid, accounting for up to 20%-40%. It can neutralize 

hard water ions, soften water quality, and synergize with surfactants to greatly improve cleaning power.


2. Food Industry

Food Additives: As moisture retainers, quality improvers, and pH adjusters, food-grade products (E451) are permitted for use in certain foods.

Application Examples:

Meat Products: Used in ham, sausages, fish balls, etc., to improve the water-holding capacity of meat, making the product more tender and increasing yield.

Dairy Products: Used in cheese, dairy beverages, etc., as a stabilizer and emulsifier.

Instant Noodles: Used in noodles to enhance elasticity and reduce mushying.

Note: There are strict limits on its use in food.


3. Industrial and Water Treatment

Industrial Cleaning: Used for metal surface treatment, boiler descaling, and bleaching dispersion in the paper industry.

Water Treatment Agents: Used as water softeners and corrosion inhibitors in circulating cooling water systems and oilfield water injection to prevent scaling and corrosion in pipes and equipment.

Ceramic Industry: Used as an electrolyte in ceramic clay to improve its fluidity and stability.


4. Other Applications

Paints and Coatings: Used as a dispersant to help pigments disperse evenly.

Drilling Mud: Used as a diluent to adjust the rheological properties of drilling mud.

Safety Precautions

Industrial grade products: These are irritating and may cause harm to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract if inhaled or come into contact with them. Protective equipment should be worn when 

handling them.


Food grade products: These are relatively safe when used within the limits stipulated by regulations. However, long-term excessive intake may affect the body's absorption of minerals such as 

calcium and iron, or increase the burden on the kidneys. Therefore, consumers should be cautious about processed foods containing phosphates.
