Basic Properties

I. Physical Properties

  • Appearance: The anhydrous form is a white powder, easily absorbing moisture; the industrially commonly used heptahydrate is a pale green crystal/granule, with no obvious odor, and is easily oxidized to yellowish-brown basic ferric sulfate upon prolonged exposure to air.

  • Solubility: Easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is weakly acidic (pH≈3-4), slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in organic solvents such as acetone and ether; at 20℃, the solubility of the heptahydrate is approximately 26.3 g/100 mL of water, and the solubility increases slightly with increasing temperature.

  • Density and Melting Point: The density of the heptahydrate is approximately 1.898 g/cm³, and it loses its water of crystallization to become anhydrous when heated to 64℃; the melting point of the anhydrous form is approximately 645℃, and it easily decomposes at high temperatures.

  • Other: It has a certain degree of hygroscopicity; the heptahydrate easily effloresces in dry air, losing some of its water of crystallization and becoming loose in appearance.

II. Chemical Properties

  • Easily Oxidized: Ferrous ions have strong reducing properties and are easily oxidized to ferric ions when exposed to air (oxygen) + water. The aqueous solution will also become yellow and turbid due to oxidation upon prolonged standing.

  • Reaction with Bases: The aqueous solution reacts with strong bases (NaOH, KOH, etc.) to form a white precipitate of ferrous hydroxide. This precipitate is rapidly oxidized to a grayish-green color, eventually becoming reddish-brown ferric hydroxide.

  • Acidity/Alkalinity and Double Displacement Reaction: It is a salt of a strong acid and a weak base. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic due to the hydrolysis of ferrous ions. It reacts with soluble barium salts to form a white precipitate of barium sulfate that is insoluble in acids, which can be used to test for sulfate ions.

Main Applications

I. Water Treatment (Industrial-Grade Core Applications)

1. Drinking Water/Wastewater Flocculant: Highly efficient and low-cost, it adsorbs suspended solids, heavy metals, and phosphates in water, achieving phosphorus and nitrogen removal. Suitable for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment in printing, dyeing, and papermaking industries.

2. Water Conditioning and Reducing Agent: Removes residual chlorine and hexavalent chromium from water, adjusts pH, and helps improve water treatment efficiency. Can be used in waterworks pretreatment.

II. Agricultural Planting (Agricultural-Grade)

1. Iron Fertilizer (Follicular/Base Fertilizer): Supplements soluble iron, prevents plant chlorosis, and promotes chlorophyll synthesis. Can be applied through fertigation, soil mixing, or foliar spraying.

2. Soil Conditioner: Neutralizes alkaline soil, lowers pH, improves soil compaction, and is suitable for planting acid-loving crops such as tea and blueberries in alkaline soils.

3. Pesticide Adjuvants: Can be combined with other pesticides to prevent certain plant diseases and enhance crop nutrient absorption and stress resistance.

III. Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industries (Pharmaceutical Grade/Food Grade)

1. Oral Iron Supplements: Replenish the body's iron levels, prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia. Food-grade supplements can be used as food fortification agents.

2. Chemical Raw Materials: Used in the production of other iron salts, pigments, etc., and can also be used as a mordant in printing and dyeing to improve the colorfastness of fabrics.

IV. Metallurgy/Electroplating/Other Industrial Industries

1. Metallurgical Reducing Agents: Reduce metal oxides to refine copper, nickel, etc., and can also be used as rust removers for steel parts.

2. Electroplating Additives: Adjust electroplating solution parameters to improve coating uniformity and adhesion. Used for pretreatment of iron and copper parts for electroplating.

3. Preservatives/Decolorizing Agents: Used for corrosion prevention and decolorization in the paper industry and for tanning and corrosion prevention in the leather industry.
