Product Parameters
Basic Properties
1. Physical Properties
Appearance: Pure product is a white crystalline powder; industrial products are mostly orange-yellow or brown lumps or granules with a pungent hydrogen sulfide odor.
Solubility: Extremely soluble in water, releasing heat upon dissolution; the aqueous solution is strongly alkaline. Soluble in polar organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
Hydroxyactivity and Stability: Strongly hygroscopic; easily deliquesces upon exposure to air and slowly decomposes, releasing hydrogen sulfide gas. It decomposes upon heating to approximately 350℃, producing sodium sulfide and hydrogen sulfide.
2. Chemical Properties
Strong Alkalinity: Sodium hydrosulfide aqueous solution is strongly alkaline and reacts violently with acids to produce toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.
Reducing Properties: Possesses strong reducing properties; easily oxidized; reacts with oxidizing agents (such as potassium permanganate, chlorates, etc.) in redox reactions, potentially leading to combustion or explosion.
Corrosivity: Has some corrosiveness to metals, especially in humid environments, corroding common metals such as iron and copper.
Main Applications
I. Chemical Synthesis
Organic Synthesis Intermediates
Sodium hydrosulfide is a core raw material for the preparation of sulfur-containing organic compounds and can be used to synthesize thiols, thioethers, thiophenes, and other products. For example, in the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to synthesize sulfur-containing intermediates for antibiotics and antihistamines; in the dye industry, it participates in the production of sulfur dyes (such as sulfur black and sulfur blue), imparting good colorfastness to the dyes.
Production of Inorganic Sulfur Compounds
It can be used to prepare sodium sulfide, sodium polysulfide, and other products. Through oxidation or metathesis reactions, the produced sodium sulfide is widely used in the cooking and bleaching processes of the paper and textile industries.
II. Mineral Processing and Metallurgy
Flotation Reagents for Metal Sulfide Ores
Sodium hydrosulfide is a commonly used modifier in the beneficiation of non-ferrous metal ores, especially suitable for the flotation processes of sulfide ores such as lead, zinc, copper, and molybdenum. It can adjust the pH of the slurry, inhibit the flotation of gangue minerals such as pyrite, and improve the binding efficiency of the target mineral and the collector, thereby increasing the beneficiation recovery rate and concentrate grade.
Precious Metal Extraction
In gold and silver ore extraction, sodium hydrosulfide can be used as a leaching aid, combined with cyanide, to enhance the dissolution efficiency of precious metals; at the same time, it can reduce the interference of heavy metal ions in the slurry and improve the purity of the leachate.
III. Leather Industry
Used as a depilatory and liming agent, the strongly alkaline aqueous solution of sodium hydrosulfide can destroy the hair follicle structure in raw leather, causing the hair to separate from the hide, achieving a depilatory effect; at the same time, it can loosen the leather fibers, laying the foundation for subsequent tanning processes. Compared with traditional sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide depilation is gentler, reduces the risk of leather embrittlement, and improves the quality of finished leather.
IV. Environmental Water Treatment Field
Heavy Metal Wastewater Treatment
Sodium hydrosulfide reacts with heavy metal ions such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and copper in wastewater to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates, thereby removing heavy metal ions from the water. This method has high treatment efficiency and strong precipitation stability, making it suitable for treating heavy metal wastewater from industries such as electroplating, metallurgy, and chemicals.
Wastewater Desulfurization and Denitrification Auxiliary Agent
In flue gas desulfurization or wastewater desulfurization processes, sodium hydrosulfide can act as a reducing agent, reducing sulfates and sulfites in wastewater to sulfides, which are then separated by precipitation to achieve desulfurization. Simultaneously, it can help reduce the nitrogen oxide content in wastewater, improving the water treatment compliance rate.
Safety Precautions
Health and Safety Precautions
The main hazards of sodium hydrosulfide come from the hydrogen sulfide gas (highly toxic and flammable) produced during its decomposition and its own alkaline corrosiveness. The following precautions must be taken:
Skin Contact Protection:Sodium hydrosulfide powder and aqueous solutions are alkaline and corrosive. Contact with skin can cause redness, itching, and burns. Broken skin will worsen the irritation. When handling sodium hydrosulfide, alkali-resistant nitrile rubber gloves, long-sleeved anti-corrosion protective clothing, and high-top safety boots must be worn to avoid exposing the skin. If accidental contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. If burns or ulcers occur, seek medical attention immediately.
Eye Protection:If the powder or solution splashes into the eyes, it can corrode the conjunctiva and cornea, causing severe pain, conjunctival congestion, blurred vision, and in severe cases, corneal damage. Impact-resistant, alkali-resistant goggles must be worn during operation. A full-face mask should be used for protection during dusty processes such as feeding and mixing. If contact with eyes occurs, immediately lift eyelids and flush with plenty of sterile saline or water for 15-20 minutes. Do not rub eyes and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Respiratory Protection: Hydrogen sulfide gas produced by the decomposition of sodium hydrosulfide is highly toxic. Inhalation of small amounts can cause headache, dizziness, and nausea. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to difficulty breathing, confusion, and even suffocation and death. Operations must be carried out in a closed fume hood or a forced-ventilation work area, while wearing a respirator (equipped with a hydrogen sulfide filter canister). Operations without protection are strictly prohibited. A hydrogen sulfide gas detector must be used during operations to monitor the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the air in real time.
Ingestion Protection: Sodium hydrosulfide is not edible. Ingestion will burn the mucous membranes of the mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract, while releasing hydrogen sulfide, causing poisoning symptoms. Thoroughly wash hands after handling. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. The product must be stored in a sealed container in a dedicated warehouse, strictly isolated from food, beverages, and animal feed. The packaging must be clearly marked with **“Highly Toxic Chemical” and “Do Not Ingest” warnings. If accidentally ingested, do not induce vomiting. Immediately drink plenty of milk or egg whites to protect the digestive tract lining, and take the product label to a doctor.
