Sodium thiosulphate, chemical formula Na₂S₂O₃, also known as sodium bisulphite, sodium thiosulphate, or hyposulphite, is a colourless or white crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 158.11 (anhydrous). It is readily soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol, exhibiting reducing properties as a common thiosulphate salt. It can be obtained as a colourless monoclinic crystal with five molecules of crystallisation water, namely sodium thiosulphate pentahydrate, with a molecular weight of 248.18. Furthermore, sodium thiosulphate finds extensive applications in wastewater treatment, analytical chemistry, and the processing of metallic minerals.

Main Applications

【Application One】

Possesses systemic translocation properties alongside potent contact and stomach poison effects, controlling various rice pests as well as vegetable and fruit tree insects.

【Application Two】

Employed as a dechlorinating agent following pulp and cotton fabric bleaching; utilised in the food industry as a chelating agent and antioxidant; applied in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a detergent and disinfectant.

【Application Three】

A novel insecticide exhibiting stomach poison, systemic, and contact action. Effective against rice stem borers (Oryzaephilus surinamensis, O. bicolor), rice leaf rollers (Pseudotylostroma sp.), rice thrips (Rhinoglossus sp.), and pests of vegetables and fruit trees.

Used in manufacturing fixing powders and photographic fixing agents, as well as desiccants. In tanning, it serves as a reducing agent for dichromate salts during leather tanning.
