Basic Properties

Physical Properties (Appearance and Solubility)

Appearance: White, translucent solid in the form of flakes, granules, or small sticks.
Hygroscopicity: Highly hygroscopic (readily absorbs moisture from the air and deliquesces); consequently, it is frequently used as a desiccant.
Solubility: Highly soluble in water, releasing a large amount of heat upon dissolution (a strongly exothermic reaction). It is also readily soluble in ethanol and glycerol but insoluble in organic solvents such as acetone and diethyl ether.
Density and Melting Point: Density is approximately 2.13 g/cm³; melting point is approximately 318.4°C.

Chemical Properties (Typical Strong Alkali Characteristics)

Reaction with acids (neutralization): Reacts with acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid to form salts and water.
Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive to skin, paper, and fabrics; its common name, "caustic soda," stems from this property.
Exothermic dissolution: When preparing a solution, the solid must be added slowly to water while stirring; never pour water onto the solid caustic soda, as violent boiling and splashing can easily cause severe burns.

Main Applications

1. Pulp and Paper (Kraft Process)

Utilizes the strong alkalinity of NaOH to separate lignin from cellulose in wood. It dissolves lignin at high temperatures, leaving behind pure pulp fibers used to produce kraft paper, corrugated cardboard, and high-quality sanitary paper products.

2. Textiles and Rayon

Mercerization: Cotton fabrics are immersed in a concentrated NaOH solution to swell the fibers and enhance their strength, luster, and dye absorption capacity.

Viscose Fiber: Used in the production of rayon and cellophane.

3. Petroleum and Natural Gas Refining

Used to remove mercaptans and naphthenic acids from crude oil, thereby reducing the acid value; also used to adjust pH levels in drilling mud and inhibit bacterial growth.

4. Water Treatment (pH Adjustment and Heavy Metal Precipitation)

Adjusts the pH of municipal water supplies or industrial wastewater to a neutral level (around 7.0) and reacts with heavy metals (such as copper, lead, and cadmium) in wastewater to form insoluble hydroxide precipitates, facilitating their removal via filtration.
