Sodium Methoxide (SMO, CH₃ONa) is a white, hygroscopic solid that is strongly alkaline and corrosive. It reacts violently with water to produce methanol and sodium hydroxide. Prepared by the reaction of methanol and metallic sodium, it is commonly used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, a reagent in condensation reactions, and a feedstock for biodiesel production. It must be stored in a sealed, anhydrous environment, and handled with care, keeping it away from water and acids.

  • Solubility: Soluble in methanol, ethanol, and other alcohol solvents; reacts violently immediately upon contact with water.

Chemical Properties

  • Strong Alkalinity: Sodium methoxide is a stronger base than sodium hydroxide and is widely used as a catalyst and base catalyst in organic reactions.

  • Strong Corrosivity: Highly irritating and corrosive to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; protective equipment (such as goggles, corrosion-resistant gloves, and protective clothing) must be worn during handling.

  • Decomposition in Water/Moisture: Reacts with water to produce sodium hydroxide and methanol. This reaction is exothermic and may pose a hazard.

  • Flammability: Its methanol solution is highly flammable. It must be stored and transported away from fire and heat sources and sealed in a cool, well-ventilated place.

Main Applications


1. Biodiesel Production

  • Sodium methoxide is a highly efficient catalyst in the transesterification reaction of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters). It catalyzes the reaction of vegetable oils or animal fats (triglycerides) with methanol to produce biodiesel and the byproduct glycerol.

2. Pharmaceutical Industry

Sodium methoxide is an important base and methoxylating agent in drug synthesis.

  • Used in the synthesis of various vitamins (such as vitamin A and B1), antibiotics, sulfonamides, and analgesics. Reactions it participates in include transesterification, condensation, rearrangement, and dehydrohalogenation.

3. Organic Synthesis and Fine Chemicals

Sodium methoxide is an indispensable strong base reagent in laboratories and factories.

  • Claisen condensation and Dickmann condensation: Used in the synthesis of important intermediates such as β-keto esters.

  • Williamson synthesis: Used in the synthesis of mixed ethers.

  • As a strong base: Used for the removal of acidic hydrogen or to promote elimination reactions.

4. Food Processing

  • In the food industry, sodium methoxide can be used in the transesterification process of oils to alter the physical properties of vegetable oils (such as melting point and consistency), for the production of shortening, margarine, etc. It is important to note that catalyst residue must be completely removed from the final product.

5. Other Applications

  • Edible Oil Treatment: Used to reduce the free fatty acid content in waste edible oils.

  • Synthetic Dyes and Pigments: Participates in reactions as an alkaline catalyst.

Hand Protection: Use chemical-resistant, leak-proof rubber gloves (e.g., butyl rubber, neoprene rubber). Check and replace regularly.

Body Protection: Wear chemical protective clothing or aprons to prevent solution or dust from coming into contact with skin. Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics.

Respiratory Protection: When working in dusty environments or confined spaces, wear a dust mask or supplied-air respirator.

Foot Protection: Wear chemical protective boots to prevent liquid splashes.

Safe operating procedures

Environmental Controls: All operations should be performed in a dry, well-ventilated environment, preferably in a glove box or fume hood.

Handling: Use dry, clean, dedicated tools. Handle gently to avoid generating dust.

Sealing: Seal the container immediately after use to prevent deliquescence.

General Principles: 

Do not handle alone.

Direct contact with water and strong acids is strictly prohibited.

Appropriate emergency response equipment should be provided near the operating area.
