Potassium Silicate, commonly known as potassium water glass, is a compound formed by the combination of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and potassium oxide (K₂O) in varying ratios. Its general formula is often represented as K₂O·nSiO₂, where n is the modulus (molar ratio of SiO₂/K₂O). It is commercially available as a colorless or slightly colored viscous liquid (aqueous solution) or a white to off-white solid powder/granules. Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline. Potassium silicate exhibits excellent binding properties, heat resistance, and chemical stability, making it an important industrial raw material in welding materials, refractory materials, detergents, and construction coatings.

  4. Construction Materials: Used as a concrete densifier/hardener, floor hardener, and base for fire-resistant coatings.

  5. Wood Treatment: Used as a component in wood preservatives and flame retardants.

  6. Arc Welding: Used as a covering agent in fluxes for submerged arc welding.

  1. Health Hazards:
    · Strong alkali. Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Highly corrosive.
    · Inhalation of mist or dust may cause respiratory irritation and damage.
    · Fatal if swallowed - causes severe burns of the digestive tract.

  2. Handling Protection:
    · Must wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and a face shield.
    · Wear splash-proof/dust-tight eye protection when handling liquid or powder.
    · Wear impermeable protective clothing to avoid skin contact.
    · Provide safety shower and eye wash equipment.

  3. Storage & Transportation:
    · Store liquid product in a cool place. Protect from freezing (may cause irreversible gelling or separation).
    · Store solid product in a dry, ventilated place to prevent moisture absorption and caking.
    · Keep containers tightly closed.
    · Store separately from acids to avoid violent reactions.

  4. Fire Fighting:
    · The substance is non-combustible.
    · No toxic flammable gases are generated in a fire.
    · Can be used to extinguish fires of other combustible materials (as it melts and smothers the fire).
    · Firefighters should be aware of its alkaline corrosive hazards and wear conventional protective gear.
