Sodium ethanol oxide (SEO, C₂H₅ONa) is a white to pale yellow powder, hygroscopic, and reacts violently with water to produce ethanol and sodium hydroxide. It is prepared by the reaction of ethanol with metallic sodium and is a strong basic catalyst and nucleophile, widely used in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical preparation. Basic Properties

  • Chemical Formula and Structure: C₂H₅ONa

  • Physical Form: Usually a white or slightly yellow powder, also commonly found and transported as a 21-30% ethanol solution.

  • Strong Base: Sodium ethoxide is a typical strong base, even stronger than sodium hydroxide. It reacts rapidly with acids, water, and compounds containing acidic hydrogen (such as alcohols and phenols).

  • Hygroscopicity and Reactivity: Sodium ethoxide is extremely hygroscopic, rapidly absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from the air to form sodium hydroxide and ethanol, or sodium carbonate. Therefore, it must be stored and handled under strictly air- and moisture-free conditions.

  • Solubility: Easily soluble in ethanol and undergoes dissociation. It hydrolyzes violently in water.

  • Main Reaction Mechanism: Its core chemical behavior stems from the strong nucleophilicity and basicity of the ethoxy anion (C₂H₅O⁻).

Main Applications

1. Pharmaceutical Industry 

  • In drug synthesis, sodium ethoxide is a key catalyst for condensation reactions and Claisen condensation reactions. It is used to construct complex drug molecular skeletons and is an indispensable intermediate in the synthesis of many antibiotics, analgesics, cardiovascular drugs, and vitamins (such as vitamin B1).


2. Biodiesel Production 

  • In the transesterification reaction of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters), sodium ethoxide is one of the most efficient homogeneous basic catalysts. It catalyzes the reaction of vegetable oils or animal fats with methanol to produce clean energy biodiesel and the byproduct glycerol. Its high catalytic activity is crucial for improving yield and production efficiency.


3. Organic Synthesis and Fine Chemicals 

  • Dehydration Reactions: Used to catalyze the dehydration of aldehydes or ketones to produce unsaturated compounds.

  • Alkylation Reactions: As a strong base, used to promote alkylation reactions on oxygen or nitrogen atoms.

  • Stoub Condensation Reactions: An important reaction for the synthesis of unsaturated ketones.

  • Dehydrohalogenation: Used to remove hydrogen halides from haloalkanes to prepare alkenes.


4. Fragrance and Dye Industry 

  • Sodium ethoxide participates in the synthesis of intermediates for various fragrances and dyes, constructing specific chromophores and aroma molecular structures through complex organic condensation and rearrangement reactions.

Safety Precautions

  • Hazards: Flammable, corrosive, wet hazard.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Corrosion-resistant gloves, goggles, respirator, and protective clothing must be worn during handling.

  • Operating Environment: Must be operated in a dry environment protected by an inert gas (such as nitrogen or argon). Avoid contact with air and water.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from sources of ignition and oxidizers. Ideal storage containers are steel cylinders or sealed bags filled with inert gas.

  • Emergency Handling:

  • Skin Contact: Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush with plenty of water and seek immediate medical attention.

  • Spill Handling: Cover with dry, inert material (such as sand), carefully collect the spill, and dilute with plenty of water in a safe place.
