Product Parameters
Basic Properties
1. Physical Properties
Appearance and Morphology: DAP is typically a white or off-white crystalline powder or granules. Industrial-grade products are often uniform granules after granulation. It is odorless, has some hygroscopicity, and easily absorbs moisture in humid air, gradually agglomerating. Granular products have better anti-caking properties than powdered products.
Density and Melting Point: Its density is approximately 1.619 g/cm³, and its melting point is 155℃. When heated above the melting point, it begins to decompose, losing its water of crystallization (if in aqueous form) and releasing ammonia gas.
Solubility: It is extremely soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 57.5 g/100 mL of water at 25℃. The resulting aqueous solution is weakly alkaline (pH value approximately 8.0~8.5). It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, a characteristic that facilitates its application and separation in aqueous systems.
Other Physical Properties: DAP aqueous solutions have good electrical conductivity and are strong electrolytes. Granular products have high mechanical strength, making them easy to store and transport, and less prone to breakage.
2. Chemical Properties
Acid-Base Reaction: DAP is a weakly basic phosphate. In its aqueous solution, HPO₄²⁻ exists in hydrolysis and ionization equilibrium (HPO₄²⁻ + H₂O ⇌ H₂PO₄⁻ + OH⁻, HPO₄²⁻ ⇌ PO₄³⁻ + H⁺). It reacts with strong acids to form monoammonium phosphate ((NH₄)₂HPO₄ + H⁺ = NH₄H₂PO₄ + NH₄⁺), and with strong bases, it releases ammonia and forms triammonium phosphate (which then easily decomposes into diammonium hydrogen phosphate and ammonia).
Thermal Decomposition: Decomposition begins at 155℃. Above 200℃, it gradually loses ammonia and moisture, successively converting into monoammonium phosphate, ammonium polyphosphate, etc., and finally decomposes at high temperatures into phosphorus pentoxide and nitrogen.
Precipitation reaction: Its aqueous solution can undergo precipitation reactions with metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. For example, it reacts with calcium ions to form calcium hydrogen phosphate precipitate. This property can be used in water treatment to remove heavy metal ions. However, it can also lead to partial fixation of these ions in calcium-containing soils, affecting phosphorus absorption.
Complexing property: (HPO4^{2-}) can form stable complexes with some metal ions. In electroplating and metal surface treatment, it can be used as a complexing agent to help stabilize the concentration of metal ions in the plating solution and improve the quality of the coating.
Main Applications
1. Agricultural Planting Sector
Core Compound Fertilizer: This is DAP's primary application. DAP contains approximately 18% nitrogen and 46% phosphorus (as P₂O₅), making it a high-concentration nitrogen-phosphorus binary compound fertilizer. It offers balanced nutrient release and high absorption and utilization rates, suitable for use as a base fertilizer or top dressing. It is applicable to various crops such as wheat, corn, rice, cotton, melons, fruits, and vegetables. It promotes root development, flower bud differentiation, and grain plumpness, and is particularly suitable for phosphorus-deficient soils and crops during critical phosphorus-demanding periods. It can also be used for chlorine-sensitive crops (such as tobacco and citrus).
Raw Material for Compound Fertilizers: DAP is a core raw material for producing multi-element compound fertilizers and blended fertilizers. It can be formulated with urea, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, etc., to create compound fertilizers with different nutrient ratios to meet the fertilization needs of different crops and soils.
Seedling and Planting Substrates: In seedling substrates and hydroponics nutrient solutions, DAP can serve as a nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient source, providing balanced minerals for seedling growth and ensuring robust development. It can also be used in microbial fertilizer production, providing nutrients for functional strains and promoting their reproduction.
2. Industrial Production Fields
Water Treatment Agents: DAP can be used as a water quality stabilizer in circulating cooling water systems. On one hand, it can adjust the pH value of the water and alleviate pipe corrosion; on the other hand, its phosphate ions can form complexes or slightly soluble precipitates with calcium and magnesium ions, inhibiting scale formation. It can also be used to assist in the removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater treatment.
Flame Retardant Materials: DAP can be used alone or in combination with ammonium polyphosphate, aluminum hydroxide, etc., to prepare intumescent flame retardants for flame retardant treatment of materials such as plastics, coatings, wood, and paper. At high temperatures, DAP decomposes to produce ammonia and phosphoric acid. Ammonia can dilute flammable gases, and phosphoric acid can form a flame-retardant char layer, blocking oxygen and heat transfer, thus improving the fire resistance of the material.
Electroplating and Surface Treatment: In the electroplating industry, DAP can be used as a complexing agent and buffer in processes such as nickel and zinc plating. It stabilizes the pH of the plating solution and complexes metal ions, preventing hydrolysis and precipitation, thus improving the uniformity, gloss, and adhesion of the coating. It can also be used in metal surface phosphating to enhance the bond between the metal substrate and the coating.
Refractory Materials and Ceramics: DAP can be used as a binder for refractory materials and a flux in ceramic production. It improves the high-temperature stability of refractory materials and the density and smoothness of ceramic products. It is commonly used in the production of industrial refractory bricks, daily-use ceramics, and special ceramics.
3. Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Fields
Pharmaceutical Excipients: In pharmaceutical preparations, DAP can be used as a pH buffer to stabilize the acid-base environment of oral liquids and injections, extending the shelf life of drugs. Simultaneously, due to its nitrogen and phosphorus content, it can regulate the electrolyte balance of body fluids and can also be used as an auxiliary ingredient in electrolyte supplements.
Biological Experimental Reagents: DAP is a common component in the preparation of phosphate buffer solutions. It can be combined with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and other compounds to adjust the pH of the buffer system, maintaining acid-base stability in experiments such as enzymatic reactions, cell culture, and protein purification. It can also serve as a nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient source for microbial culture media, ensuring the growth and reproduction of microbial strains.
4. Other Special Applications
Food Industry: Food-grade DAP can be used as a food additive in the production of baked goods such as bread and biscuits. It provides a phosphorus source for yeast growth, promotes dough fermentation, and improves the texture and taste of baked goods. It can also be used as a nutritional fortifier in some functional foods to supplement the nitrogen and phosphorus minerals needed by the human body.
Fire Extinguishing Agent Raw Material: DAP can be used to prepare dry powder fire extinguishing agents, especially suitable for extinguishing fires involving flammable solids and liquids. Its decomposition products can cover the surface of burning materials, playing a role in suffocation and cooling.
Water treatment and soil improvement: In soil improvement, DAP can be used to adjust the pH value of acidic soil (because its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline) while replenishing soil nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients and improving soil fertility; in wastewater denitrification and phosphorus removal processes, it can be added as a phosphorus source to assist in biological denitrification and phosphorus removal.
Safety Precautions
1. Storage Safety
Storage Environment: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Temperature should be controlled below 30℃, and relative humidity should be maintained below 70%. Dehumidification and ventilation equipment should be provided to prevent DAP from absorbing moisture and clumping. The warehouse should be away from heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid changes in the material's properties due to high temperature or humidity.
Isolation Storage: Strictly prohibit storage with strong acids (such as concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid), strong alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), reducing substances, and heavy metal salts to prevent acid-base neutralization or complexation reactions that could lead to component deterioration. Food-grade DAP must be stored separately from industrial-grade DAP and strictly isolated from food, feed, and other materials to avoid cross-contamination. Packaging must be sealed tightly, with clear labeling of the material name, grade, and "moisture-proof" and "damage-proof" markings on the outer layer.
Stacking Standards: Use pallets to elevate the material, avoiding direct contact with the ground. The stacking height should not exceed 2 meters to prevent damage to the bottom packaging. Sufficient fire and operational access should be provided for emergency response and daily management.
2. Transportation Safety
Packaging Requirements: Food-grade DAP must be packaged in food-grade containers (such as food-grade paper bags or plastic drums). Industrial-grade DAP can be packaged in sealed woven bags or metal drums. Before transportation, the packaging must be thoroughly inspected to ensure there is no damage or leakage.
Transportation Conditions: Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean, avoiding rain and high-temperature exposure. Handle with care during transportation to prevent packaging from collisions, compression, or deformation. DAP is not a hazardous chemical and can be transported as a general chemical; however, food-grade products must comply with food transportation hygiene standards and must not be transported together with toxic or hazardous goods. Transport vehicles must be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
