Oxalic Acid

Oxalic Acid is the simplest dicarboxylic acid. It commonly exists as a colorless transparent crystal or white powder (dihydrate, HOOCCOOH·2H₂O). It is a strong acid and a reducing agent with powerful chelating properties towards metals. Its main uses include being a bleaching agent and agent for extracting rare earth metals (~50% of consumption), a cleaning and rust-removing agent for metal equipment, a wood bleach, and a chemical synthesis intermediate. It is highly toxic, potentially fatal if ingested, and a strong irritant and corrosive to skin and mucous membranes.
