Basic Properties

1. Physical Properties

  • Appearance:At room temperature, it is a **white powder or crystalline granules**. It has two crystal forms: a high-temperature form (Type I, melting point 622℃) and a low-temperature form (Type II). Their chemical properties are basically the same. Type I is more hygroscopic and readily soluble in water; Type II is less hygroscopic and dissolves more slowly.

  • Solubility:It is readily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. At 20℃, its solubility is approximately 13g/100mL of water. A small amount of heat is absorbed during dissolution, and the viscosity of the aqueous solution increases with increasing concentration. It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

  • Hygroscopicity and Clumping:It has strong hygroscopicity, especially Type I. It easily absorbs moisture and clumps in humid air, therefore it must be stored in a sealed, moisture-proof container.

  • Stability:It is stable under normal temperature and dry conditions; it decomposes into sodium pyrophosphate and sodium metaphosphate when heated above 900℃; in acidic aqueous solutions, it gradually hydrolyzes to form sodium orthophosphate and sodium pyrophosphate.

2. Chemical Properties

  • Chelation:This is one of the core chemical properties of STPP. It can form stable, soluble chelates with metal ions such as Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ in water, effectively softening hard water, and is therefore widely used as a water softener.

  • Buffering:Its aqueous solution has good buffering properties, stabilizing the pH value of the solution between 9.5 and 10.5. It can maintain the stability of the system's pH under fluctuating acidity and alkalinity, making it suitable as a buffering component in detergents, food additives, and other products.

  • Dispersibility:It has excellent dispersing properties for solid particles or colloidal substances, preventing particle aggregation and sedimentation. It can enhance the suspending ability of detergents on dirt, or be used as a dispersing aid in industrial production.

  • Complexing and Catalytic Properties:It can form complexes with certain metal ions, acting as a co-catalyst in organic synthesis reactions to improve reaction efficiency.

3. Main Applications and Related Properties

  • Detergent Industry: Utilizing its chelating, buffering, and dispersing properties, it is used as a major additive in laundry detergents and dishwashing liquids to soften hard water and enhance detergency.

  • Food Industry: As a food additive (food-grade STPP), utilizing its water retention and chelating properties, it is used in meat and seafood processing to improve product water retention and tenderness.

  • Industrial Water Treatment: Due to its chelating properties, it is used as a water softener for circulating cooling water to prevent scale buildup in equipment.

Main Applications

1. Detergent Industry (Core Application Areas)

  • Synthetic Detergent Main Additive:This is STPP's primary application. It chelates calcium and magnesium ions in water, softening hard water and preventing scale buildup on clothing or tableware. Simultaneously, its excellent dispersibility suspends dirt particles in water, preventing secondary dirt adhesion and significantly enhancing the detergent's cleaning power.

  • Metal Surface Cleaning Agent:In industrial cleaning, STPP can be used as a component in metal degreasing and rust-removing cleaning agents. By chelating metal ions and dispersing oil, it improves cleaning effectiveness and is suitable for pretreatment of metal surfaces such as steel and aluminum products.

2. Food Industry (Food-Grade STPP)

  • Food Quality Improvers:

- Meat Processing: Used in products such as ham, sausages, and meatballs, it chelates metal ions in meat, improves water retention, reduces moisture loss during processing, keeps meat products tender and elastic, and improves slicing performance.

- Aquatic Product Processing: In products such as fish balls and shrimp balls, it retains water and strengthens the gluten, preventing the texture from deteriorating after freezing.

- Noodle Processing: Added to noodles, bread, and biscuits, it enhances the toughness and extensibility of dough, making noodles more chewy and delaying aging.

  • Moisture Retaining Agents and Emulsifiers:Used in dairy products, ice cream, and other foods, it stabilizes the food system, prevents oil-water separation, and improves product texture uniformity; in canned foods, it prevents oxidation and corrosion of the can walls, extending shelf life.

3. Water Treatment Industry

  • Water Softener and Scale Inhibitor:In industrial circulating cooling water treatment, STPP can chelate calcium and magnesium ions in the water, preventing them from forming scale on the inner walls of pipes and equipment, reducing the risk of equipment corrosion, and extending equipment lifespan.

  • Flocculation Auxiliary Agent:In wastewater treatment, it can be used as an auxiliary component of flocculants, helping suspended impurities in the water to coagulate and settle, improving wastewater treatment efficiency.

4. Ceramic Industry

  • As a ceramic body reinforcing agent and glaze additive, STPP can improve the dispersibility of ceramic raw materials, making the raw materials for the body more uniformly mixed, improving the strength and molding quality of the body; in glazes, it can enhance the suspension of the glaze, preventing glaze stratification and sedimentation, resulting in higher surface gloss and more uniform color in ceramic products.

5. Other Industrial Applications

  • Paper Industry: Used as a dispersant and sizing aid in papermaking, it improves the fiber dispersibility of pulp, reduces fiber flocculation, and results in better paper uniformity; it also enhances the water resistance and strength of paper.

  • Textile Industry: As a dyeing and finishing aid, it chelates metal ions in water during the textile dyeing process, preventing dyes from combining with metal ions to form color spots, thus improving dyeing uniformity and color brightness.

  • Refractory Materials: Used in the production of refractory materials, it improves the molding properties of refractory raw materials and enhances the high-temperature stability of refractory products.

Safety Precautions

1. Health and Safety Precautions

  • Skin Contact Protection

Sodium tripolyphosphate powder or aqueous solution is weakly alkaline. Prolonged or direct contact can damage the skin's lipid barrier, leading to dryness, peeling, and itching. Wear **nitrile rubber gloves** and long-sleeved protective clothing during handling to avoid exposed skin. Wash hands thoroughly with neutral hand sanitizer and apply hand cream after handling. If contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of running water for 10-15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if redness, swelling, or stinging occurs.

  • Eye Protection

Splashes of sodium tripolyphosphate powder or solution into the eyes can irritate the conjunctiva and cornea, causing redness, swelling, pain, and tearing. Wear **impact-resistant goggles** during handling. For high-risk operations such as feeding and mixing, a full-face mask is recommended. If eye contact occurs, immediately lift the eyelids and flush with plenty of water or saline solution for 15-20 minutes. Avoid rubbing the eyes during this time and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

  • Respiratory Protection

Dry sodium tripolyphosphate powder is prone to dust generation. Inhalation can irritate the nasal mucosa, throat, and respiratory tract, causing discomfort such as dry throat, cough, and chest tightness. When operating in confined spaces, a **ventilation system or fume hood** must be turned on; when performing dusty operations such as feeding and screening, a **KN95 or higher level dust mask** must be worn. Avoid prolonged inhalation of dust without protection. If respiratory discomfort occurs during operation, immediately move to a place with fresh air to rest.

  • Ingestion Protection

Industrial-grade sodium tripolyphosphate is strictly prohibited from consumption; food-grade sodium tripolyphosphate must be used strictly according to national standards and should not be ingested indiscriminately. Ingestion can irritate the digestive tract, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. Hands must be thoroughly washed after handling. Products must be stored separately, with industrial-grade and food-grade **strictly distinguished**. Packaging must be clearly labeled "Industrial Use" or "Food Additive". If ingestion occurs, immediately drink plenty of warm water to dilute it; do not induce vomiting, and bring the product label to seek medical attention. 

2. Storage and Transportation Safety Precautions

  • Storage Requirements

- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should be controlled below 35℃, and the relative humidity should not exceed 80%.

- Sodium tripolyphosphate is hygroscopic and prone to clumping. It must be stored in **sealed, moisture-proof packaging** (such as woven bags lined with polyethylene film). When stacking, elevate the bottom of the bag at least 10cm and maintain a distance of at least 20cm from the walls to prevent moisture absorption and deterioration.

- Do not store with strong acids, strong oxidizers, or hygroscopic chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and potassium permanganate to avoid chemical reactions that could generate toxic gases or cause product failure.

- The storage area must be equipped with spill response equipment (brooms, dustpans, leak-proof mats) and fire extinguishers (dry powder fire extinguishers).

  • Transportation Requirements

- Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean. The cargo compartment should be lined with rainproof tarpaulins or plastic film. During transportation, cover the vehicle with a tarpaulin to prevent rain, sun exposure, and dust.

- Handle with care during loading and unloading to prevent packaging damage and powder leakage; industrial-grade and food-grade sodium tripolyphosphate should be transported **separately**, and must not be mixed with strong acids, strong alkalis, or other hazardous chemicals.

- Comply with transportation route regulations, avoiding densely populated areas such as residential areas and schools; transportation of food-grade products must meet the hygiene standards for food additive transportation.

3. Leakage Emergency Handling

  • Small Leakage

Immediately collect the leaked material into a **sealed container** using a dry broom or shovel, label it "Waste STPP," and store it properly. Do not discard it indiscriminately; avoid flushing the leaked material into sewers to prevent water pollution.

  • Large Leakage

Quickly establish a warning zone, prohibiting unauthorized personnel from entering; use impermeable mats or sand to contain the leak area to prevent spread; personnel handling the situation must wear full protective equipment (protective clothing, gloves, goggles, dust masks), and transfer the leaked material in batches to dedicated collection containers, entrusting a qualified unit to handle it.
