Basic Properties

1. Physical Properties

  • Appearance and Morphology: MAP is typically a white crystalline powder or granules. Industrial-grade products are mostly uniform granules after granulation. It is odorless and less hygroscopic than diammonium phosphate (DAP). It does not easily clump in dry environments. Granular products have higher mechanical strength, facilitating storage and transportation.

  • Density and Melting Point: Its density is approximately 1.803 g/cm³, and its melting point is 190℃. It begins to decompose when heated to its melting point, accompanied by the release of ammonia and moisture.

  • Solubility: It is extremely soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 41.6 g/100 mL water at 25℃. The resulting aqueous solution is weakly acidic (pH value approximately 4.0~5.0). It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, but can achieve rapid dissolution and nutrient release in aqueous solutions.

  • Other Physical Properties: MAP aqueous solution is a strong electrolyte with good conductivity. Crystalline MAP possesses certain optical properties, and some high-purity products can be used to prepare special optical materials.

2. Chemical Properties

  • Acid-Base Reaction: MAP is a weakly acidic phosphate. In its aqueous solution, H₂PO₄⁻ exists in ionization and hydrolysis equilibrium (H₂PO₄⁻ ⇌ H⁺ + HPO₄²⁻, H₂PO₄⁻ + H₂O ⇌ H₃PO₄ + OH⁻), with the degree of ionization greater than that of hydrolysis. It can react with strong bases to form diammonium phosphate (NH₄H₂PO₄ + NH₃·H₂O = (NH₄)₂HPO₄ + H₂O), but shows no significant acid-base neutralization with strong acids, and can be used as a component of acidic buffer systems.

  • Thermal decomposition: It begins to decompose into diammonium phosphate and phosphoric acid when heated to 190℃. At temperatures above 280℃, it further decomposes into ammonium polyphosphate, ammonia, and phosphorus pentoxide, ultimately decomposing into phosphorus oxides and nitrogen at high temperatures.

  • Precipitation reaction: Its aqueous solution can react with metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron to form calcium dihydrogen phosphate or calcium hydrogen phosphate precipitates. This property can be used to remove heavy metal ions in water treatment, but its application in agriculture is affected by soil calcium and magnesium ions, requiring appropriate application.

  • Complexing property: (H₂PO₄⁻) ions can form complexes with some metal ions. In electroplating and metal surface treatment, it can act as a complexing agent, stabilizing the concentration of metal ions in the plating solution and improving the uniformity and adhesion of the coating.

3. Stability and safety

  • Stability: Chemically stable at room temperature and pressure, it is not prone to redox reactions and has better storage resistance than DAP; however, prolonged exposure to high temperatures and strong alkaline environments should be avoided, otherwise decomposition or deterioration may occur.

  • Toxicity: MAP is a low-toxicity chemical; small amounts of contact or ingestion pose no risk of acute poisoning. However, its aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and high concentrations can cause mild skin irritation upon contact with skin. Splashing into the eyes can cause eye discomfort. Long-term inhalation of its dust may irritate the respiratory mucosa, causing symptoms such as dry throat and cough.

  • Environmental Impact: MAP has low toxicity to aquatic organisms, but large-scale discharge into water bodies can lead to excessive nitrogen and phosphorus levels, causing eutrophication. Excessive agricultural application can cause soil acidification and nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation, increasing the risk of non-point source pollution.

Main Applications

1. Agricultural Planting Sector

  • High-Concentration Compound Fertilizer: MAP is a core nitrogen-phosphorus binary fertilizer, containing approximately 12% nitrogen and 61% phosphorus (as P₂O₅). It is one of the water-soluble phosphate fertilizers with the highest phosphorus content, and its aqueous solution is weakly acidic, making it suitable for application in alkaline soils. It effectively improves soil pH and replenishes nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. It can be used as a base fertilizer, top dressing, or foliar fertilizer, suitable for crops such as wheat, corn, rice, cotton, melons, and vegetables. It is particularly effective in meeting the phosphorus requirements of crops during the seedling and flowering/fruiting stages, promoting root development and grain plumpness. It can also be used in the cultivation of chlorine-sensitive crops such as tobacco and citrus.

  • Raw materials for compound fertilizers and water-soluble fertilizers: MAP is a key raw material for the production of multi-element compound fertilizers and specialized water-soluble fertilizers. It can be compounded with urea, potassium sulfate, potassium chloride, etc., to create fertilizers with different nutrient ratios, suitable for different crops and soil fertilization programs. In hydroponic nutrient solutions, MAP can serve as a precise source of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, ensuring balanced nutrient absorption by crops.

  • Seedling substrate component: In the production of seedling substrates and microbial fertilizers, MAP provides nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients to seedlings and functional strains, promoting robust seedling growth, rapid strain reproduction, and improving seedling survival rate and microbial fertilizer activity.

2. Firefighting field

  • Core raw material for dry powder fire extinguishing agents: This is a distinctive industrial application of MAP. MAP is a major component (comprising over 80%) of ABC-type dry powder fire extinguishing agents. Its extinguishing principle is as follows: at high temperatures, the phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acid produced by MAP decomposition form a flame-retardant char layer on the surface of the burning material, isolating it from oxygen. Simultaneously, the released ammonia gas dilutes flammable gases, interrupting the combustion chain reaction. It can effectively extinguish various types of fires, including solid, liquid, and gaseous fires, and is widely used in fire protection systems in buildings, mines, ships, and vehicles.

3. Industrial Production Field

  • Water Treatment Agent: MAP can be used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in circulating cooling water systems. Its phosphate ions can form stable complexes or slightly soluble precipitates with calcium and magnesium ions in the water, inhibiting scale formation. It can also adjust the pH value of the water, alleviating corrosion of metal pipes, making it particularly suitable for alkaline water treatment scenarios.

  • Electroplating and Surface Treatment: In electroplating processes, MAP can be used as a buffer and complexing agent in nickel and zinc plating systems to stabilize the weakly acidic environment of the plating bath, prevent the hydrolysis and precipitation of metal ions, and improve the uniformity, gloss, and adhesion of the coating. It can also be used in metal surface phosphating to enhance the bonding between the metal substrate and the coating.

  • Flame Retardant Materials: MAP can be used alone or in combination with ammonium polyphosphate, magnesium hydroxide, etc., to prepare intumescent flame retardants for flame-retardant modification of materials such as plastics, wood, paper, and coatings. The flame-retardant layer formed by the decomposition of MAP at high temperatures can block heat and oxygen, significantly improving the fire resistance of materials, and its environmental friendliness is superior to halogen-containing flame retardants.

  • Optical and Electronic Materials: High-purity MAP crystals have excellent optical transmittance and nonlinear optical properties, and can be used to prepare special optical materials such as laser devices and optical sensors. In the electronics industry, MAP can be used as a flame-retardant encapsulation material for electronic components, improving the fire resistance reliability of equipment.

4. Pharmaceutical and Biological Fields

  • Pharmaceutical Excipients: In pharmaceutical preparations, MAP can be used as a pH buffer to stabilize the acid-base environment of oral solutions and injections, extending their shelf life. Simultaneously, due to its nitrogen and phosphorus content, it can be used as an auxiliary ingredient in electrolyte supplements to regulate body fluid electrolyte balance.

  • Biological Experimental Reagents: MAP is a common component in the preparation of phosphate buffer solutions. It can be combined with diammonium hydrogen phosphate to construct acidic buffer systems, maintaining acid-base stability in experiments such as enzymatic reactions, cell culture, and protein purification. It can also serve as a nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient source for microbial culture media, ensuring the growth and reproduction of strains and the smooth progress of experiments.

5. Other Special Applications

  • Food Industry: Food-grade MAP can be used as a food additive, providing a phosphorus source for yeast in baked goods production, promoting dough fermentation, and improving the texture and taste of bread and biscuits. It can also be used as a nutritional fortifier in functional foods to supplement the nitrogen and phosphorus minerals needed by the human body.

  • Ceramics and Refractory Materials: MAP can be used as a flux in ceramic production to improve the density and smoothness of ceramic products; in refractory materials, it can be used as a binder to enhance the high-temperature stability and mechanical strength of refractory bricks.

Safety Precautions

1. Storage Safety

  • Storage Environment: MAP should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. The temperature should be controlled below 30℃, and the relative humidity should be maintained below 75%. Dehumidification and ventilation equipment should be provided to prevent MAP from absorbing moisture and clumping. The warehouse should be far away from heat sources, open flames, and direct sunlight to avoid material decomposition due to high temperatures.

  • Isolation Storage: MAP must not be stored with strong alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), strong oxidizing substances, or heavy metal salts to prevent neutralization or complexation reactions that could lead to component deterioration. Food-grade MAP must be stored separately from industrial-grade MAP and strictly isolated from food, feed, and other materials to avoid cross-contamination. Packaging must be sealed tightly, with clear labeling of the material name, grade, and "moisture-proof" markings on the outer layer.

  • Stacking Standards: MAP should be stacked on pallets to avoid direct contact with the ground. The stacking height should not exceed 2 meters to prevent damage to the bottom packaging. Sufficient fire and operational access should be provided for emergency response and daily management.

2. Transportation Safety

  • Packaging Requirements: Food-grade MAP must be packaged in food-grade containers (such as food-grade paper bags or plastic drums). Industrial-grade MAP can be packaged in sealed woven bags or metal drums. Before transportation, the packaging integrity must be thoroughly checked to ensure there is no damage or leakage.

  • Transportation Conditions: Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean, avoiding rain and high-temperature exposure. Handle with care during transportation to prevent packaging collisions, compression, and deformation. MAP is not a hazardous chemical and can be transported as a general chemical; however, food-grade products must comply with food transportation hygiene standards and must not be transported together with toxic or hazardous goods. Transport vehicles must be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

3. Usage Safety

  • Operational Protection: When handling industrial-grade MAP, it is recommended to wear dust masks, protective goggles, and rubber gloves to prevent dust inhalation or contact with eyes and skin. Food-grade MAP must be handled in a clean production environment. Operators must have valid health certificates and strictly follow food production hygiene regulations to avoid material contamination.

  • Handling Precautions: Avoid large-scale operations in confined spaces to prevent dust accumulation; smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited during operation. After operation, promptly wash hands, face, and exposed skin with clean water and change work clothes.

  • Leakage Handling: In case of a small dust leak, collect it with a dry broom or vacuum cleaner into a sealed container for recycling or proper disposal; in case of an aqueous solution leak, absorb it with sand and then treat it centrally. Do not discharge it directly into sewers to prevent eutrophication.
