Product Parameters
Basic Properties
1. Physical Properties
Appearance and Morphology: MKP is usually a white crystalline powder or colorless tetragonal crystals, odorless, readily soluble in water, and the dissolution process is accompanied by a slight endothermic phenomenon. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic.
Density and Melting Point: Its density is approximately 2.338 g/cm³, and its melting point is 252.6℃. When heated above its melting point, MKP begins to dehydrate and decompose, gradually transforming into products such as potassium dihydrogen pyrophosphate and potassium pyrophosphate.
Solubility: MKP has excellent water solubility, reaching 226 g/100 mL of water at 20℃, far exceeding that of most phosphates. It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and acetone, a characteristic that facilitates its purification and application in aqueous solutions.
Other Physical Properties: As a strong electrolyte, its aqueous solution has good conductivity; the crystals have some hygroscopicity, but the degree of hygroscopicity is lower than that of dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, and it does not easily clump when stored at room temperature.
2. Chemical Properties
Acid-Base Buffering Property: MKP is a typical acidic phosphate. In its aqueous solution, H₂PO₄⁻ exists in ionization and hydrolysis equilibrium (H₂PO₄⁻⇌HPO₄²⁻+H⁺, H₂PO₄⁻+H₂O⇌H₃PO₄+OH⁻, with the degree of ionization greater than the degree of hydrolysis). Therefore, it can react with strong bases to form dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (KH₂PO₄+KOH=K₂HPO₄+H₂O), and also react with strong acids to form phosphoric acid. It is often used as the core component of buffer solutions.
Thermal decomposition: When heated to 252.6℃, MKP first melts and then dehydrates to form potassium dihydrogen pyrophosphate (2KH₂PO₄K₂H₂P₂O₇ + H₂O); further heating to higher temperatures (above approximately 400℃) will further decompose it into condensed phosphates such as potassium pyrophosphate and potassium polyphosphate.
Precipitation and complexation reactions: Its aqueous solution can undergo precipitation reactions with some metal ions, such as reacting with calcium ions to form calcium dihydrogen phosphate (with low solubility), and reacting with silver ions to form a yellow silver phosphate precipitate; simultaneously, H₂PO₄⁻ can form weak complexes with small amounts of metal ions, which can help stabilize ion concentrations in electroplating and water treatment applications.
Nutritional activity: MKP contains two essential plant nutrients, phosphorus (approximately 22.7%) and potassium (approximately 28.7%), both of which are fast-acting nutrients that are easily absorbed and utilized by plants.
Main Applications
1. Agriculture and Horticulture
High-Efficiency Water-Soluble Fertilizer: This is MKP's core application. It contains approximately 52% phosphorus and 34% potassium, both of which are readily available nutrients with excellent water solubility. It can be formulated as foliar fertilizer, fertigation fertilizer, and drip irrigation fertilizer, suitable for various crops. It promotes flower bud differentiation, protects flowers and fruits, improves fruit quality and yield, and enhances plant resistance to cold, drought, and lodging. It is especially suitable for chlorine-sensitive crops such as melons, vegetables, flowers, and tobacco, as well as for nutrient supplementation during critical growth stages (such as the heading and fruit expansion stages).
Soilless Culture and Tissue Culture Substrate: In soilless culture systems, MKP is the core phosphorus and potassium source of the nutrient solution, enabling precise control of nutrient concentration. It can also be used as a component of the culture medium for plant tissue culture, providing stable phosphorus and potassium minerals for tissue culture seedlings, ensuring their rooting and growth.
Microbial Cultivation: In bio-fertilizer production, MKP provides phosphorus and potassium nutrients to beneficial bacterial strains (such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria and phosphorus-containing bacteria), promoting strain reproduction and enhancing the activity and efficacy of microbial fertilizers.
2. Food and Beverage Industry
Food Additive: As an acidity regulator and buffer, MKP stabilizes the pH of food systems, preventing product spoilage due to acid-base fluctuations. It is commonly used in carbonated beverages, fruit juices, dairy products, jellies, canned goods, etc.; it can also act as a chelating agent, inhibiting the oxidation of metal ions in food and extending shelf life.
Nutritional Fortifier: Rich in phosphorus and potassium, it can be added to sports drinks, infant formula, and nutritional meal replacements to replenish electrolytes lost after exercise or provide essential minerals for specific populations.
Baking and Fermentation Aid: In baked goods such as bread and pastries, MKP provides a phosphorus source for yeast, accelerating yeast fermentation and improving dough fluffiness and texture; in beer brewing, it can adjust the pH of the fermentation liquid, promote yeast metabolism, and improve beer quality.
3. Pharmaceutical and Biological Fields
Pharmaceutical Excipients and Reagents: As a pH buffer, MKP is commonly used in injectable and oral solutions to stabilize the physicochemical properties of drugs and ensure efficacy. It can also be formulated as an electrolyte supplement for treating hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia, or to replenish electrolytes in postoperative patients.
Biological Laboratory Reagents: MKP is a core ingredient in the preparation of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (combined with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate), maintaining the acid-base stability of experimental systems. It is widely used in biochemical experiments such as cell culture, enzyme activity detection, and protein purification, and is one of the basic laboratory reagents.
4. Industrial Production Fields
Water Treatment Agents: MKP can be used as a water quality stabilizer in circulating cooling water systems. It can chelate calcium and magnesium ions in water to prevent scale deposition and adjust the pH value of the water, reducing the corrosion rate of metal pipes. It is often used in combination with other water treatment agents.
Electroplating and Surface Treatment: In electroplating processes, MKP acts as a buffer and complexing agent, stabilizing the pH of the plating solution and improving the uniformity and gloss of the coating, making it particularly suitable for electroplating precision instruments. It can also be used in metal surface phosphating to enhance coating adhesion.
Flame Retardant Materials: When combined with other phosphates, MKP can be used to prepare flame-retardant plastics and fire-retardant coatings. At high temperatures, it forms a dense char layer, blocking oxygen and heat transfer and improving the flame retardancy rating of the material.
Optical and Electronic Materials: In optical glass manufacturing, MKP acts as a clarifying agent and flux, improving the transparency and optical properties of the glass. In fuel cell applications, it can be used as an electrolyte component, conducting ions and stabilizing the internal environment of the battery.
5. Other Special Applications
Feed Additives: It can be used as a phosphorus and potassium supplement in livestock and aquatic feed, promoting animal bone development and metabolism, and improving the growth performance and disease resistance of farmed species.
Cosmetic Ingredients: In skincare products, toothpaste, and other daily chemical products, MKP can adjust the pH value of the system, maintain product stability, and help enhance the gentleness of the product.
Safety Precautions
1. Storage Safety
Storage Environment: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Temperature should be controlled below 35℃, and relative humidity maintained below 75% to prevent MKP from absorbing moisture and clumping. The warehouse should be away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and equipped with dehumidifiers and ventilation equipment to prevent material deterioration due to humidity.
Separate Storage: Strictly prohibit storage with strong acids, strong alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and concentrated sulfuric acid), reducing substances, and heavy metal salts to prevent acid-base neutralization or complexation reactions. Food-grade MKP must be stored separately from industrial-grade MKP and isolated from food, feed, and other materials to avoid cross-contamination. Packaging must be sealed tightly, with clear labeling of the material name, grade, and "moisture-proof" markings on the outer layer.
Stacking Standards: Use pallets to elevate the material, avoiding direct contact with the ground. The stacking height should not exceed 2 meters to prevent damage to the bottom packaging, and sufficient fire and operational access should be provided.
2. Transportation Safety
Packaging Requirements: Food-grade MKP must be packaged in food-grade containers (such as food-grade paper bags or plastic drums). Industrial-grade MKP can be packaged in sealed woven bags or metal drums. Before transportation, the packaging must be checked for integrity to ensure there is no damage or leakage.
Transportation Conditions: Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean, avoiding rain and high-temperature exposure. Handle with care during transportation to prevent packaging from collisions, compression, or deformation. MKP is not a hazardous chemical and can be transported as a general chemical; however, food-grade products must comply with food transportation hygiene standards and must not be transported together with toxic or hazardous goods. Transport vehicles must be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
3. Usage Safety
Operational Protection: When handling industrial-grade MKP, it is recommended to wear a dust mask, protective goggles, and rubber gloves to prevent dust inhalation or contact with eyes and skin. Food-grade MKP must be handled in a clean production environment. Operators must have valid health certificates and strictly follow food production hygiene regulations to avoid material contamination.
Handling Precautions: Avoid large-scale operations in confined spaces to prevent dust accumulation in the air; smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited during operation. After operation, wash hands, face, and exposed skin with clean water immediately and change work clothes.
Leakage Handling: In case of a small dust leak, collect it with a dry broom or vacuum cleaner into a sealed container for recycling or proper disposal; in case of an aqueous solution leak, absorb it with sand and then treat it centrally. Do not discharge it directly into sewers to prevent eutrophication.
