Formic acid, with the chemical formula HCOOH, is a weak electrolyte and the simplest carboxylic acid. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a strong pungent odor. Contact with the skin can cause blistering. It is commonly found in the secretions of bees, certain ants, and caterpillars, hence also known as "ant acid." It can mix with water, ethanol, ether, glycerol (glycerin), and most other organic solvents in any proportion, and has some solubility in hydrocarbons (partially miscible). It is widely used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, rubber, disinfection, and preservation.
