It is a colorless crystalline solid at room temperature (below 16.6°C), resembling ice, hence the name; above this temperature, it is a clear liquid with a pungent, vinegar-like odor. It is a fundamental chemical feedstock and the simplest carboxylic acid. It is a key intermediate in producing countless compounds, including vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), purified terephthalic acid (PTA), acetate esters, and acetic anhydride. It is also widely used as a solvent and acidity regulator.
