Sodium Acetate

Sodium acetate (CH₃COONa) is a white crystalline or powdery substance, readily soluble in water, and weakly alkaline. It can be prepared by neutralizing acetic acid with sodium carbonate, and exists in anhydrous and trihydrate forms. Its core uses include food preservative, buffer, and color-fixing agent in printing and dyeing; it is also used in water treatment and pharmaceuticals. It must be stored in a sealed, moisture-proof container, avoiding contact with strong acids, and precautions should be taken during handling.

Basic Properties


Physical Properties


Appearance: Colorless to white crystals or powder.


Odor: Slightly acetic acid odor or almost odorless.


Solubility: Very soluble in water, soluble in ethanol.


pH: Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline. This is because the acetate ion undergoes hydrolysis: CH₃COO⁻ + H₂O ⇌ CH₃COOH + OH⁻.


Melting Point: The trihydrate melts in its own water of crystallization at approximately 58°C.


Hygroscopicity: Anhydrous sodium acetate is hygroscopic.


Chemical Properties


Weak Salt Acid: As a salt formed from a weak acid (acetic acid) and a strong base (sodium hydroxide), its aqueous solution has buffering capacity.


Thermal Stability: Upon heating, the trihydrate melts first, dehydrating to anhydrous form. Under strong heat (above approximately 324°C), anhydrous sodium acetate decomposes into sodium carbonate and acetone.

Main Applications


1. Industrial Applications

  • Textile Dyeing: Used as a neutralizing agent and buffer in the textile industry to ensure the dye bath operates under stable pH conditions, improving dyeing results and uniformity.

  • Electroplating Process: Used as a buffer in electroplating solutions to stabilize pH values.

  • Concrete Additive: Used as an antifreeze and retarder in concrete, aiding in concrete construction at low temperatures.

  • Rubber Industry: Used as a coagulant in the production of synthetic rubber (such as neoprene).


2. Food Industry

  • Preservatives: Inhibit microbial growth by adjusting pH values, extending the shelf life of food.

  • Acidity Regulators: Used to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of food, improving flavor and stability.

  • Flavoring Agents: Can be used as seasonings to provide a slight saltiness or enhance flavor; commonly used in potato chips, snacks, etc.


3. Medical and Biochemical Applications

  • Hemodialysis Fluid: An important component of hemodialysis fluid, used to correct acidosis and replenish the body's buffering system.

  • Buffers: Used in pharmaceutical and biological laboratories to prepare buffer solutions and maintain pH stability in reaction systems.


4. Other Applications

  • Heat Packs: Utilize the supersaturated properties of sodium acetate trihydrate. Crystallization is triggered by twisting a metal sheet; the released heat of crystallization (heat of fusion) can provide a temperature of approximately 50-60°C, used in hand warmers, body heat packs, etc.

  • Defrosting Agents: As an environmentally friendly defrosting agent, it is less corrosive to concrete and metals than sodium chloride (table salt), but its potential environmental impact (eutrophication) still needs attention.

Safety Precautions


Health Hazards


Irritation: Mildly irritating to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Dust may cause sneezing.


Ingestion: Large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Although low toxicity, industrial-grade products should not be intentionally ingested.


Inhalation: Avoid inhaling dust, which may irritate the respiratory tract.


Environmental Hazards


Sodium acetate itself has low toxicity but decomposes in water. Large releases into the environment may cause changes in water pH and deplete oxygen in the water, indirectly affecting aquatic life.


Safe Handling and Storage


Handling: Handle in a well-ventilated area to avoid dust generation. Wear appropriate protective equipment such as dust goggles, gloves, and a mask.


Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Sodium acetate trihydrate should be stored in a sealed container to prevent efflorescence (loss of water of crystallization). Anhydrous sodium acetate requires strict moisture protection.


First Aid Measures


Eye Contact: Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.


Skin contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.


Inhalation: Move to fresh air.


Ingestion: Rinse mouth, drink plenty of water, do not induce vomiting. If discomfort persists, seek medical attention immediately.


Stability and Reactivity


Stability: Stable under normal conditions.


Incompatible substances: Reacts with strong oxidizing agents and strong acids.


Decomposition products: Decomposition at high temperatures may produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and toxic fumes.
