Basic Properties

Physical Properties
  • Appearance and Morphology: DKP is usually a white crystalline powder or granules, and also exists as a trihydrate (K₂HPO₄・3H₂O). The crystals are orthorhombic, odorless, and somewhat hygroscopic, readily absorbing moisture and clumping in humid air.

  • Density and Melting Point: The density of anhydrous dipotassium hydrogen phosphate is approximately 2.44 g/cm³, and the density of the trihydrate is 1.56 g/cm³. The melting point of the anhydrous form is approximately 158℃. Heating to this temperature initiates dehydration, and further heating above 400℃ decomposes it into products such as potassium pyrophosphate.

  • Solubility: Extremely soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 150 g/100 mL water at 20℃. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, a characteristic that facilitates separation and application in aqueous solutions.

  • Other physical properties: The aqueous solution has a certain degree of conductivity and is a strong electrolyte; its crystals are relatively stable at room temperature and have no significant volatility.

Chemical properties

  • Acid-base reaction: DKP is a dibasic weakly basic phosphate. In its aqueous solution, HPO₄²⁻ undergoes hydrolysis and ionization equilibrium (HPO₄²⁻ + H₂O ⇌ H₂PO₄⁻ + OH⁻, HPO₄²⁻ ⇌ PO₄³⁻ + H⁺). Therefore, it can react with strong acids to form potassium dihydrogen phosphate (K₂HPO₄ + H⁺ = KH₂PO₄ + K⁺) and with strong bases to form tripotassium phosphate (K₂HPO₄ + OH⁻ = K₃PO₄ + H₂O), making it an important component of buffer solutions.

  • Precipitation Reaction: Its aqueous solution can react with various metal ions to form precipitation reactions. For example, it reacts with calcium ions to form calcium hydrogen phosphate (CaHPO₄) precipitate, and with magnesium ions to form magnesium hydrogen phosphate precipitate. This property is often used in water treatment to remove heavy metal ions or to prepare phosphate precipitates.

  • Thermal Decomposition: It loses its water of crystallization at 158℃ (for trihydrates). Above 400℃, it undergoes a condensation reaction to form potassium pyrophosphate (K₄P₂O₇). Further heating at high temperatures will produce chain phosphates such as potassium polyphosphate.

  • Complexing Property: HPO₄²⁻ ions can form complexes with some metal ions. In electroplating, metal surface treatment, and other fields, it can be used as a complexing agent to help stabilize the concentration of metal ions.

Main Applications

1. Food and Beverage Industry

  • Food Additives: DKP is a commonly used food-grade buffer that adjusts the pH of food systems, stabilizes product flavor and texture, and is frequently used in dairy products, jellies, canned goods, and carbonated beverages. It can also be used as an emulsifier auxiliary ingredient to improve the emulsification stability of food and prevent oil-water separation.

  • Nutritional Fortifiers: Because it is rich in phosphorus and potassium, two essential minerals, it can be used in infant formula, sports drinks, and nutritional supplements to replenish the body's electrolyte needs, especially suitable for people who lose electrolytes after exercise.

  • Fermentation Aids: In the production of fermented foods such as bread and beer, DKP provides a phosphorus source for yeast growth, promotes yeast metabolism and reproduction, and improves fermentation efficiency and product quality.


2. Agriculture and Horticulture

  • Water-soluble Fertilizer: DKP is a highly efficient binary phosphorus and potassium fertilizer with good water solubility and high absorption and utilization rate. It can be made into foliar fertilizer or fertigation fertilizer for crops such as melons, vegetables, and flowers. It can promote flower bud differentiation, fruit enlargement, and enhance plant resistance (drought resistance, cold resistance), and is especially suitable for chlorine-sensitive crops (such as tobacco and citrus).

  • Culture Medium Component: In microbial fertilizer production or plant tissue culture, DKP can serve as a phosphorus and potassium nutrient source for the culture medium, providing necessary minerals for strains or tissue culture seedlings to ensure their growth and reproduction.


3. Industrial Production

  • Water Treatment Agent: DKP can be used as a water quality stabilizer in circulating cooling water systems. It can complex with calcium and magnesium ions in water to prevent scale deposition; it can also adjust the pH value of water, helping to reduce the corrosion rate of metal pipes.

  • Electroplating and Surface Treatment: In the electroplating industry, DKP acts as a complexing agent and buffer, stabilizing the pH value of the electroplating solution and improving the uniformity and gloss of the coating. It is commonly used in zinc plating, nickel plating, and other processes. It can also be used in metal surface phosphating to enhance the adhesion between the metal substrate and the coating.

  • Detergents and Daily Chemicals: As a detergent builder, DKP enhances detergency while buffering the pH value of the detergent solution, reducing damage to clothing fibers. In daily chemical products such as toothpaste, it can adjust the pH of the system, protecting the oral mucosa.

  • Flame Retardant Materials: DKP can be compounded with other flame retardants to prepare flame-retardant plastics and coatings. At high temperatures, it promotes char formation, blocking oxygen and heat transfer, thus improving the flame-retardant properties of the material.


4. Pharmaceutical and Biological Fields

  • Pharmaceutical Excipients: In pharmaceutical formulations, DKP can be used as a pH buffer to stabilize the physicochemical properties of drugs and extend shelf life. It is commonly used in the formulation of oral solutions and injections. It can also be used as an electrolyte supplement to treat hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia.

  • Biological Experimental Reagents: In biochemical experiments, DKP is a commonly used buffer solution component (e.g., in the preparation of phosphate buffer PBS with potassium dihydrogen phosphate) to maintain the acid-base stability of experimental systems, ensuring the smooth progress of experiments such as enzyme activity and cell culture.


5. Other Special Applications

  • Optical Glass Manufacturing: DKP can be used as a glass clarifying agent and flux to improve the transparency and uniformity of optical glass, enhancing its optical properties.

  • Fuel Cells: In some fuel cell systems, DKP can be used as an electrolyte component to conduct ions and stabilize the internal acid-base environment of the battery, improving the battery's discharge efficiency and lifespan.

Safety Precautions

1. Storage Safety

  • Storage Environment: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, avoiding damp environments to prevent DKP from absorbing moisture and clumping, affecting its performance. The warehouse temperature should be controlled below 30℃, away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and equipped with moisture-proof and ventilation facilities.

  • Separate Storage: Strictly prohibit storage with strong acids (such as concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid), strong alkaline substances (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), and heavy metal salts to avoid chemical reactions that could lead to component deterioration. Store separately from food and feed to prevent cross-contamination. Packaging must be sealed tightly and clearly labeled with the material name and warning labels.

  • Stacking Requirements: Use pallets for stacking, avoiding direct contact with the ground. Stacking height should not be too high to prevent damage to the bottom packaging. Ensure adequate fire-fighting and operational access.


2. Transportation Safety

  • Packaging Protection: Food-grade DKP must be packaged in food-grade containers (such as food-grade plastic drums and paper bags). Industrial-grade DKP can be packaged in sealed metal drums or woven bags. Before transportation, check the packaging integrity to prevent leakage.

  • Transportation Conditions: Transport vehicles must be kept dry and clean, avoiding rain and high-temperature exposure; handle with care during transportation to prevent packaging damage from collisions; ordinary DKP is not classified as a dangerous good and can be transported as ordinary chemicals, but food-grade products must meet food transportation hygiene standards and should not be transported together with toxic or hazardous goods.


3. Safety Precautions

  • Operational Protection: When handling industrial-grade DKP, it is recommended to wear a dust mask, protective goggles, and rubber gloves to prevent dust inhalation or contact with eyes and skin; food-grade DKP handling must be carried out in a clean environment, adhering to food production hygiene regulations, and operators must hold valid health certificates.

  • Operational Contraindications: Avoid large-scale operation in confined spaces to prevent dust accumulation; smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited during operation; wash hands and face promptly after operation and change work clothes.

  • Leakage handling: If a small amount of dust leaks, it should be collected immediately with a dry broom or vacuum cleaner and placed in a sealed container for recycling or proper disposal; if an aqueous solution leaks, it should be absorbed with sand and treated to prevent it from flowing into the sewer and causing eutrophication of the water body.
