It occurs naturally in willow bark and wintergreen leaves and is the precursor to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Basic Properties

  • Acidity: Possesses the properties of both carboxylic acid and phenolic hydroxyl groups, making it more acidic than benzoic acid.

  • Esterification: Reacts with acetic anhydride to form acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

  • Color Reaction: Reacts with aqueous ferric chloride to produce a purple-red color, a characteristic reaction of phenolic hydroxyl groups.

  • Stability: Stable in air, but slowly changes color when exposed to light. Sublimes upon exposure to heat.

Main Applications


Pharmaceuticals:

Dermatological Agent: Primary use. As a keratolytic and keratoplastic agent to treat acne, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, corns, and warts.

Precursor: Key raw material for synthesizing aspirin (analgesic/antipyretic) and sodium salicylate (anti-rheumatic).

Cosmetics:

Personal Care: Used in anti-acne cleansers, serums, and lotions for its ability to unclog pores, exfoliate, and reduce inflammation.

Preservative: Used in some cosmetics due to its antimicrobial properties.

Industrial Uses:

Dye Intermediate: For synthesizing various azo dyes.

Perfume Fixative: For synthesizing salicylate fragrances (e.g., methyl, benzyl ester).

Agriculture:

Used as a plant hormone to induce systemic acquired resistance.

Safety Precautions


  1. Toxicity:

    • Acute Toxicity: Harmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irritation and corrosion. Overdose can lead to salicylism (tinnitus, dizziness, hyperventilation).

    • Chronic Toxicity: May cause kidney damage with prolonged or repeated exposure.

  2. Irritancy:

    • Skin: Irritant to skin and mucous membranes. Can cause contact dermatitis. Use with caution at high concentrations (>2%) on skin (risk of burns, peeling).

    • Eyes: Causes serious eye irritation.

    • Respiratory: Inhalation of dust irritates the respiratory tract.

  3. Flammability:

    • Combustible. Emits toxic fumes (e.g., phenol) under fire conditions.

  4. Protective Measures:

    • Ventilation: Use local exhaust to control dust.

    • PPE:

      • Respiratory: Dust respirator (e.g., N95) if dust levels are high.

      • Eyes: Safety goggles.

      • Skin: Wear impermeable gloves (e.g., nitrile) and protective clothing to avoid skin contact.

  5. Spill Handling:

    • Collect spillage with a dry container. Avoid raising dust. Clean residue with a wet cloth or sand, then wash area with plenty of water.

  6. Storage:

    • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from incompatible materials (strong oxidizers, strong bases). Keep container tightly closed.

  7. First Aid:

    • Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen and seek medical attention.

    • Eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water or saline for at least 15 minutes, lifting eyelids. Seek immediate medical attention.

    • Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation or allergy occurs, seek medical advice.

    • Ingestion: DO NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Drink plenty of water or milk. Seek immediate medical attention.
