Basic Properties

1. Physical Properties

  • Appearance: At room temperature, it is a white powder, granules, or glassy solid, odorless, and highly hygroscopic, readily absorbing moisture and deliquescing when exposed to air.

  • Solubility: Easily soluble in water, absorbing a small amount of heat during dissolution, resulting in a transparent aqueous solution; insoluble in organic solvents (such as ethanol, ether, acetone, etc.). Its solubility increases with temperature, approximately 97 g/100 mL of water at 20℃.

  • Melting Point and Stability: The melting point is approximately 616℃ (decomposition). Heating to high temperatures causes it to decompose into sodium pyrophosphate, sodium metaphosphate, etc. It is stable under dry conditions at room temperature, but prolonged exposure to humid air will lead to hydrolysis and a decrease in the content of active ingredients.

  • Density and Specific Gravity: The relative density is approximately 2.484 g/cm³ (20℃). The bulk density varies depending on the particle shape, generally between 0.8-1.2 g/cm³.

2. Chemical Properties

  • Hydrolysis Characteristics: Sodium hexametaphosphate is a long-chain polymer that undergoes hydrolysis in aqueous solution, gradually decomposing into smaller molecules such as orthophosphate and pyrophosphate. The hydrolysis rate is significantly affected by temperature and pH, and is accelerated under acidic or alkaline conditions.

  • Complexing Ability: It possesses excellent chelating ability for metal ions, forming stable soluble complexes with polyvalent metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper. This is the core principle behind its use as a water softener and scale inhibitor.

  • pH Value and Buffering Capacity:A1% aqueous solution has a pH of approximately 5.8-7.3, exhibiting weak acidity to neutrality. It possesses a certain buffering capacity, maintaining the stability of the solution's pH within a certain range.

  • Reactions with Other Substances:

  • Reaction with Strong Acids: Forms a mixture of orthophosphate and metaphosphate;

  • Reaction with Strong Bases: Hydrolysis is accelerated under heating conditions, forming phosphates;

  • Reaction with Salts: Reacts with calcium salts, magnesium salts, etc., preventing the formation and deposition of scale.

Main Applications

1. Food Industry

As a food additive (food-grade sodium hexametaphosphate must meet national standards), its main functions are improving quality and extending shelf life:

  • Meat Processing: Used as a water-retaining agent and quality improver, it chelates calcium and magnesium ions in meat, improving its water-holding capacity and preventing water loss and hardening during processing and refrigeration. It also improves the elasticity and tenderness of meat, commonly used in products such as ham, sausages, and meatballs.

  • Aquatic Product Processing: Effectively prevents shrimp, crab, and other aquatic products from becoming loose due to water loss during freezing. It also inhibits enzymatic browning in aquatic products, maintaining their bright color.

  • Flour and Starch Products: Added to noodles and dumpling wrappers, it enhances the dough's toughness and extensibility, making flour products less prone to breakage and giving them a chewy texture. In starch production, it can be used as a dispersant to prevent starch granule aggregation.

  • Dairy Products and Beverages: Used as an emulsifying stabilizer to prevent fruit pulp sedimentation and dairy product stratification in beverages, improving product uniformity and stability; it can also act as a chelating agent to reduce the impact of calcium and magnesium ions in water on the taste and stability of beverages.

  • Canned Foods: Chelates metal ions in canned goods, preventing reactions between metal ions and food components that could lead to corrosion of the can's inner wall, discoloration of the food, and extending the shelf life of canned goods.

2. Water Treatment Field

It is a commonly used scale inhibitor and water softener in industrial and domestic water treatment:

  • Industrial Circulating Water Treatment: It can form stable, soluble chelates with calcium, magnesium, iron, and other metal ions in water, preventing these ions from forming scale on the surfaces of pipes and heat exchangers, reducing the risk of equipment corrosion and blockage, and is widely used in circulating water systems of power plants, chemical plants, steel plants, etc.

  • Boiler Water Treatment: As a water softener, it removes hardness ions from boiler water, preventing scale buildup on the boiler's inner wall, improving boiler thermal efficiency, and preventing safety hazards caused by scale buildup.

  • Wastewater Treatment: Can be used as a flocculant aid, in conjunction with flocculants, to promote the sedimentation of suspended solids in water and improve wastewater treatment efficiency.

3. Daily Chemicals and Detergent Industry

  • Detergent Formulation: Used as an additive, it chelates calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, improving the detergency of detergents, preventing redeposition of dirt, and enhancing the emulsification and dispersion effects of detergents, reducing residue after washing clothes.

  • Toothpaste Production: As an anti-caking agent and stabilizer, it prevents toothpaste ingredients from clumping, while chelating calcium ions in the oral cavity to reduce plaque and tartar formation; it also adjusts the pH value of toothpaste, protecting tooth enamel.

  • Cosmetics: Used in lotions, creams, and other products as a chelating agent and stabilizer, preventing metal ions from damaging product ingredients and improving the stability and shelf life of cosmetics.

4. Textile Printing and Dyeing Industry

  • Water Softening Treatment: Water used in printing and dyeing requires the removal of hardness ions. Sodium hexametaphosphate can chelate calcium and magnesium ions in water, preventing uneven dyeing and decreased color fastness caused by excessively hard water, thus improving the color quality of printed and dyed products.

  • Dye Dispersant: Helps dye particles disperse evenly in the dye liquor, preventing dye agglomeration and ensuring uniform dyeing; it can also be used as a scouring auxiliary to remove impurities and residual metal ions from fabrics.

  • Bleaching Auxiliary: During fabric bleaching, it chelates heavy metal ions, preventing them from catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, improving bleaching efficiency, and reducing fabric damage.

5. Other Industrial Fields

  • Metallurgical Industry: Used as a flotation agent, it disperses sludge and chelates harmful metal ions during mineral flotation, improving the flotation recovery rate of target minerals; it can also be used for metal surface treatment to remove oxides and dirt from metal surfaces.

  • Paper Industry: As a paper strengthening agent and dispersant, it improves the fiber bonding strength of pulp, enhancing paper strength and uniformity; it also inhibits the deposition of calcium and magnesium ions in papermaking water, preventing equipment scaling.

  • Ceramic Industry: Used as a dispersant for ceramic green bodies, it reduces the viscosity of the green body slurry, improves the slurry's fluidity and uniformity, resulting in more stable ceramic product molding and reducing deformation and cracking during firing.

Safety Precautions

Health and Safety Precautions

  • Skin Contact Protection: Sodium hexametaphosphate powder and aqueous solution are slightly corrosive. Long-term or direct contact can cause dry skin, peeling, cracking, and even contact dermatitis. Wear nitrile rubber gloves, long-sleeved work clothes, and non-slip work shoes during operation to avoid exposed skin. If accidental contact occurs, immediately rinse the affected area with plenty of running water for 10-15 minutes. If redness, swelling, itching, or other discomfort occurs, apply a mild skin ointment. Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe.

  • Eye Protection: Powder or solution splashes into the eyes can severely irritate the conjunctiva and cornea, causing redness, swelling, pain, and tearing. Wear impact-resistant goggles during operation. When performing dusty operations such as feeding and mixing, a protective face shield can be used in conjunction. If eye contact occurs, immediately lift the eyelids and flush continuously with plenty of saline or water for 15-20 minutes. Avoid rubbing the eyes during this time. Seek medical attention as soon as possible after rinsing.

  • Respiratory Protection: Sodium hexametaphosphate dry powder is easily generated as dust. Inhalation can irritate the nasal mucosa, throat, and respiratory tract, causing symptoms such as dry throat, cough, and chest tightness. When working in confined spaces, a forced ventilation system must be activated; when working in open areas, wear a KN95 dust mask. Loud conversations or rapid breathing are strictly prohibited in the work area to avoid inhaling large amounts of dust.

  • Ingestion Protection: Industrial-grade sodium hexametaphosphate is not edible. Ingestion can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Excessive ingestion may affect calcium and phosphorus metabolism, leading to electrolyte imbalance. Thoroughly wash hands and face after handling. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the work area. The product must be stored strictly separately from food, beverages, and animal feed. The packaging must be labeled with the **“Industrial Product - Do Not Consume”** warning. If ingestion occurs, do not induce vomiting; immediately drink plenty of warm water to dilute the product and take the product label to a hospital for treatment.
