Main Applications


  1. Food & Feed Preservative (Primary Use):

    • Its salts (Sodium Propionate, Calcium Propionate) are widely used in bread, pastries, cheeses to prevent mold and extend shelf life.

    • Used directly as a preservative in animal feed (silage).

  2. Chemical Intermediate:

    • Production of herbicides (e.g., propionic acid derivative herbicides).

    • Synthesis of pharmaceuticals (e.g., NSAIDs) and fragrances (propionate esters, e.g., ethyl propionate, benzyl propionate).

    • Used in plastics and coatings industries to produce plasticizers (e.g., cellulose propionate) and solvents.

  3. Other Uses:

    • Used as a reagent in laboratories.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Causes severe skin, eye, and respiratory tract burns. Contact results in severe chemical burns.

    • Inhalation of vapor/mist severely irritates the nose, throat, and lungs, causing coughing, breathing difficulties, and even pulmonary edema.

    • Ingestion causes severe burns to the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, resulting in intense pain, nausea, vomiting, and potential internal damage.

  • Physical Hazards:

    • Combustible liquid. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air. May decompose at high temperatures producing irritating fumes.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Engineering Controls: Use only in a fume hood or with local exhaust ventilation to control vapors/mist.

    • Personal Protection (CRITICAL):

      • Eyes/Face: Chemical splash goggles and face shield are MANDATORY.

      • Skin/Body: Wear acid-resistant clothing, apron, and impervious gloves (e.g., butyl rubber, neoprene; natural rubber offers limited protection). Wear rubber boots.

      • Respiratory: Use a respirator for organic vapors/acid gases if exposure limits could be exceeded.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated, acid-resistant area. Use corrosion-resistant containers (stainless steel, polyethylene, glass-lined). Separate from oxidizers, bases, reducing agents.

  • First Aid (IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED):

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air immediately. Keep warm and at rest. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Skin Contact: IMMEDIATELY remove contaminated clothing. Flood affected area with copious amounts of water for at least 15-20 minutes. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Eye Contact: IMMEDIATELY hold eyelids open and flush with gentle stream of water for at least 15-20 minutes. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting! Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person! Rinse mouth (if conscious). Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Spill: Small: Absorb with inert material. Large: Contain spill. Neutralize with sodium carbonate or lime. Personnel must wear full protective equipment.
