Basic Properties

1. Physical Properties 

- Appearance & Odor: White crystalline powder or fine granular solid, odorless, non-hygroscopic, non-corrosive, free-flowing under normal storage conditions.

- Melting Point: >300 °C

- Boiling Point: Approximately 214.3 °C

- Density: 1.58 g/cm³ at 25 °C.

- Flash Point: 260 °C

- Solubility: Extremely slightly soluble in water (~0.017 g/L at 25 °C); slightly soluble in hot ethanol and methanol; insoluble in ether, acetone, benzene, and most common organic solvents .

- Physical State: Stable solid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, non-flammable, non-efflorescent.

2. Chemical Properties 

- Chemical Structure: Aromatic dicarboxylic acid with two symmetric carboxyl groups (-COOH) attached at the 1,4 positions of the benzene ring; high molecular symmetry and structural stability.

- Stability: Chemically stable under normal temperature, pressure, and dry storage conditions; resistant to light and air oxidation; incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong bases, and reducing agents; avoids high-temperature humid environment to prevent mild hydrolysis.

- Polymerization Reactivity: The most core chemical property of TPA; undergoes efficient polycondensation reaction with diols (ethylene glycol, propylene glycol) to produce high-molecular-weight polyester resins (PET, PBT).

- Acidity: Weak organic acid; pKa1 = 3.51, pKa2 = 4.82 (25 °C); reacts with strong alkalis to form soluble terephthalate salts, widely used in dyeing and wastewater treatment



Main Applications

1. Polyester Fiber & Textile Industry – Dominant Application

TPA is the fundamental raw material for producing purified terephthalic acid polyester (PET) and polyester fibers. It polymerizes with MEG to form high-strength, wear-resistant and dimensionally stable polyester yarns, widely applied in apparel, home textiles and industrial textiles. It ensures high purity and stable polymerization activity, supporting large-scale textile manufacturing.

2. Packaging PET Resins & Plastic Products

As a core monomer for food-grade PET resin, TPA produces lightweight, transparent and pressure-resistant plastic packaging materials. It is extensively used in beverage bottles, food containers, cosmetic packaging and plastic films, featuring excellent safety, chemical stability and barrier properties that meet global food contact standards.

3. Engineering Plastics & High-Performance Polymers

TPA is applied in the synthesis of high-performance engineering plastics including PBT, PCT and thermoplastic polyester elastomers. It effectively improves material heat resistance, mechanical strength and low-temperature toughness, making these plastics ideal for automotive parts, electronic components and precision industrial accessories.

4. Coatings, Paints & Adhesives

It serves as a key raw material for saturated polyester resins and powder coating resins. TPA-based coatings deliver superior hardness, weather resistance, adhesion and anti-corrosion performance, widely used in industrial equipment, metal surfaces, architectural coatings and high-temperature resistant adhesive formulations.

5. Industrial & Specialized Derivatives

TPA is a critical intermediate for manufacturing terephthalate derivatives, plasticizers and chemical additives. It is also used in the production of insulating materials, composite materials and chemical auxiliaries, offering stable chemical properties and wide compatibility for diversified industrial processing.

  • Operate in well-ventilated work areas; avoid fine TPA dust accumulation to prevent dust explosion risks and respiratory irritation.

  • Avoid direct skin, eye, and inhalation exposure; do not ingest TPA powder or dust during operation.

  • Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly after handling; prohibit eating, drinking, and smoking in working zones.

  • Handle containers gently to prevent dust spillage; avoid static buildup and contact with incompatible reactive substances.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Eye/Face: Chemical safety goggles to prevent TPA dust irritation or residual damage to ocular tissues.
  • Hands: Light-duty chemical-resistant gloves to avoid skin contact and persistent irritation.
  • Body: Disposable or impervious work clothing to prevent dust adhesion and skin exposure.
  • Respiratory: NIOSH-approved dust respirator for poor ventilation, large-scale handling or dust-heavy operations.
