Acrylic Acid is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid (C₃H₄O₂). At room temperature, it is a colorless, clear liquid with a pungent, acrid, choking odor. Its molecule contains both a carbon-carbon double bond and a carboxylic acid group, making it highly reactive and prone to polymerization. It is the key raw material for producing acrylates, which are the building blocks for acrylic resins, adhesives, coatings, and superabsorbent polymers (SAP). Inhibitors must be added to commercial acrylic acid to prevent spontaneous polymerization.

Main Applications


  1. Acrylate Esters (Primary Use):

    • Production of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, etc., accounting for the majority of its consumption.

  2. Polymer Production:

    • Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and its salts: Used in detergents, water treatment, dispersants.

    • Superabsorbent polymers (SAP): Used in diapers, feminine hygiene products, agriculture.

    • Acrylic resins: Used in water-based coatings, paints, adhesives, textile finishes, leather coatings.

  3. Other Uses:

    • Organic synthesis intermediate.

Safety Precautions


  • Health Hazards:

    • Causes severe skin, eye, and respiratory tract burns. Contact results in severe chemical burns.

    • Inhalation of vapor severely irritates the nose, throat, and lungs, causing pulmonary edema.

    • Ingestion causes severe internal burns.

    • Its toxicity and corrosivity are much higher than propionic or acetic acid.

  • Physical & Chemical Hazards:

    • Combustible liquid. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air.

    • The greatest risk is runaway polymerization: Pure acrylic acid or under heat, light, peroxides, or contamination can undergo violent exothermic polymerization, leading to container rupture and explosion. Ensure inhibitor (MEHQ) is effective and store at recommended temperature.

  • Protective Measures:

    • Engineering Controls: Use only in a fume hood or closed system. Equipment requires cooling and pressure relief.

    • Temperature Control: Often stored and transported <20°C (to prevent solidification and slow polymerization). NEVER exceed 35°C.

    • Personal Protection (CRITICAL):

      • Eyes/Face: Chemical splash goggles and face shield are MANDATORY.

      • Skin/Body: Wear impervious, acid-resistant clothing, apron, and gloves (e.g., butyl rubber, Viton).

      • Respiratory: Use supplied-air respirator (SCBA) or an A/P2 rated respirator for organic vapors/acid gases.

    • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated, acid-resistant area. Use stainless steel or polyethylene containers. Keep away from heat, ignition sources, oxidizers, and bases. Monitor inhibitor levels.

  • First Aid (IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED):

    • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air immediately. Keep warm and at rest. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Skin Contact: IMMEDIATELY remove contaminated clothing. Flood with water for 15-20 minutes. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Eye Contact: IMMEDIATELY hold eyelids open and flush with water for 15-20 minutes. Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting! Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person! Rinse mouth (if conscious). Seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

    • Spill: Small: Absorb with inert material. Large: Contain spill. Neutralize with sodium carbonate or lime. Personnel must wear Level A protection.
